The Board approved preliminary plans for the child
care center, which was designed by Patterson Architects
in Bryan, and gave Thompson the right to award a con
struction contract for the center in November. The cen
ter should be open for Fall 1998. Fred Patterson, princi
pal owner of Patterson Architects, presented the design
of the child-care center, which will be residential-style
and will have fenced play areas behind it.
Patterson said there will be classroom areas inside

“The distance to cut site bothered us a little, but we
are taking precautionary measures to ensure eveiyone’s
safety,” he said. “We strongly discourage people riding
in the back of trucks, and anyone who shows up to cut
in the back of a truck will have to walk into the site.”
Gallemore notified the Texas Department of Public
Safety, the Brazos County Sheriff Department and the
Hearne and Bryan Police Departments about students
traveling to and from cut site.
“We’ve asked these agencies to increase surveillance
on the route to cut site,” he said. “There will not be any
leeway, and tickets will be given to anyone speeding.
Our main focus is student safety, and that’s why we’re
taking all of these measures.”
Last year an A&M student was killed on Highway 6
when a pickup truck returning to A&M from Hearne
veered off the road and flipped twice. The student who
died and seven other students were riding in the bed of
the truck.
Gallemore said students may be reminded to be safe
because of the accident last year.
“This year, we’re in a lot better situation because every
body has an increased awareness of the accident that
for three-, four- and five-year-olds and infants. He
said the estimated construction cost for the 10,340-
square foot building is $800,000. He said the center
will be able to serve 118 full-time and 40 part-time
students and will include room for future expansion.
The Board awarded a construction bid to R.M. Dud
ley Construction Co., Inc. of College Station for the
Easterwood Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility.
The project will cost $2 billion and is funded by a Fed
eral Aviation Administration Grant and Texas A&M.
A construction bid of under $2 million for two grass
football practice fields was awarded to WM. Klunkert,
Inc. of Bryan.
happened last year,” he said. “Instead of acting in a reac
tive manner, we’re taking a more proactive stance with
safety precautions — that’s always more productive.”
As another safety measure, a rest stop will be set up
south of Hearne for students traveling back to campus
from cut site.
“Students can stop at the rest stop to stretch their
legs or get something to drink,” Gallemore said. “It’s all
provided by us.”
Lewis said safety is the focus of Bonfire activities.
“We want to keep everyone safe this year at cut,” he
said. “We’ll be holding some cut classes before each cut
for those who are inexperienced in swinging an ax. It’s
important to know how to take a tree down safely.”
Alex Cabanas, a senior redpot and a finance major,
said the 50-acre cut site has advantages over other sites
that were considered.
“Despite the distance, this site has it all,” he said.
“We already know the terrain, there are no big creeks
running through the property and no real hazards. The
wood is great and we already know the owner — that’s
a big bonus.”
Cabanas said most preparations for first cut Oct. 4
are finished.
“The load area and parking were already taken care
of from last year,” he said. “Now we’re preparing the
tractor paths and securing equipment.”
