CINCINNATI (AP) — Ricky
Gutierrez doubled twice and
drove in three runs Sunday, help
ing the Houston Astros close in on
the NL Central title with an 8-3
victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Astros, aiming for their first
division championship since
1986, reduced their magic number
to four heading into the final
week. Houston maintained a 3
1/2-game lead over Pittsburgh,
which beat St. Louis 14-2.
The Astros scored four runs in
the fifth inning off Mike Morgan
(8-12) to take a 6-1 lead. Houston
put five hits together in the burst,
which Gutierrez completed with a
two-run double.
Ramon Garcia (8-8) scattered
four hits in six innings, including
solo homers by Willie Greene and
Jon Nunnally, as he won his third
straight decision. The right-hander
also had one of Houston’s four
doubles.
Every Astros starter except
Thomas Howard had a hit. Derek
Bell had three singles, improving
to 7-for-12 in the series, and also
was hit by a pitch.
The Reds fell to 28-28 under

eliminated from the NL Central
