Sawyer said he did not know
where to turn until his father came
to him.
“My dad’s a recovering alcoholic,
so he knows pain,” he said. “My dad

me God was the only one who

Sawyer said he talked to God that
night. Within weeks, his white

Sawyer graduated from high school

Sawyer then went to college,
where he met his best friend, Brent.

“If you ask Dan Quayle what he

taught me true joy and true hope.”
More than two years ago, while a
sophomore in college, Sawyer was
given six months to live. He decid
ed to leave college and speak to stu
dents across the nation about the
HIV virus and AIDS.
“After people find out I have
AIDS, they really don’t treat me any
differently,” Sawyer said. “I've nev
er really experienced any negative
reactions from people.”
Mark Hurt, campus director of
Campus Crusade for Christ, said
Sawyer helps young people realize
how short life can be.
“Steve is dying,” Hurt said, “and
I think as a 20- or 22-year-old, peo
ple don’t think about dying. Life is
short... how are people this age go

there is a tie to the Corps of Cadets.
“Even though Yell Leaders are in
Corps uniforms during the week, the
Yell Leaders are representative of tine
entire student body,” he said. “The
tradition ofYell Leaders started inside
the Corps, and a lot of the ways Yell
Leaders conduct themselves has mil

Leaders have been involved around
campus in organizations like Student
Government, Muster Committee
and Fish Camp.”
Brandon Meche, a senior yell
leader and industrial distribution ma

friends and function well as a team.
“In order to represent such a
large school, we have to work to
gether as a group,” he said. “There
is a bond between the five of us be
cause of our love for Texas A&M."
Duffy said the Aggie Spirit and the
dedication of the 12 th Man motivates
the five men throughout the year.
“It is a huge honor to be a Yell
Leader,” he said. "We love the tradi

to our University.”
