SAT scores questioned DUNCANVILLE, Texas (AP) — When Duncanville High School re leased its average composite score for its seniors on the SAT college en trance exam, the results weren’t too shabby. The reported score of 1,124 was the second-highest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 1996- 97, behind only the Highland Park’s 1,153 and ahead of Plano’s 1,113. The Dallas Morning News re ported Wednesday that the school’s average SAT score actual ly was 991, near the bottom among 29 Dallas-area school districts — ahead of only Fort Worth, Lancast er and Wilmer-Hutchins. The higher score was achieved by statistics sleight of hand, the newspaper reported. The Duncanville school district reported the average score achieved by the top 43 percent of its students, while the other dis tricts’ scores reflected all students taking the test. Of Duncanville’s 648 seniors, 63 percent took the SAT. Duncanville schools officials say they weren’t trying to mislead anyone about the district’s perfor mance. The scores of the top 43 percent were used because that matches the percentage of seniors national ly who take the SAT, said Karla Oliv er, a spokeswoman for the district. Comparing Duncanville’s top 43 percent with the national aver age gives administrators a better estimate of how seniors are doing in relation to college-bound stu dents elsewhere, Ms. Oliver said. “That’s where the whole idea of comparative percentages came from,” she said. A spokesman for the College Board, the independent organi zation that oversees administra tion of the SAT and releases scores, said Duncanville’s method of calculating the aver age is unusual. ! . 1 * ! j & i i ! \ 1 I The Stones were right.
