The Aggies won 1-0 By Stephen Boudreau Staff writer In front of a record-breaking home crowd of 1,368 the fifth ranked Texas A&M Soccer Team defeated fourth-ranked Nebraska, 1-0, Sunday. “This is definitely a big confi dence boost,” Coach G. Guerrieri said. “We’ve been very hesitant thinking about conference cham pionships. Now, it’s right in front of us. So it’s something that we will fo cus on everyday.” Last season, Nebraska handed A&M its only regular season confer ence loss and defeated the Aggies in the Big 12 Championship game. In the 52nd minute, with the game scoreless, A&M freshman Alison Peters delivered a pass across the penalty box to junior- forward Sharon Pickering, who had penetrated the Nebraska de fense and had to beat only Husker keeper Rebecca Hornbacher. With a stroke of her right foot, Pickering sent the ball soaring into the left corner of the net. “I found myself in the open po sition, Alison (Peters) slid the ball right to me,” she said. It was per fect. “The ball was on my right foot, which is scary, I just tried to place it rather than go for power.” The construction of the goal fol lowed Guerrieri’s game plan of playing fast but patient. “The goal was set up with quick ness and simplicity,” Guerrieri said. “We got the ball on the left side of the field, switched it behind the defense and Sharon came in with her right foot and beat Hornbacher.” In the 67th minute, Husker Lindsay Eddleman headed a ball towards the unprotected, top, right corner of the A&M goal. Senior midfielder Sonia Ibanez, who stands a mere 5-foot, 2-inch above the ground, used every ounce of strength in her body to reach the ball and head out the potential game-tying shot inches before it crept into the back of the net. “I don’t even know if it was go ing in or not, Ibanez said. “I was just scared I was going to knock it into the top post and have it go in my own goal. The Huskers outshot the Aggies 14-8, but A&M had the better of the scoring opportunities. “The bottom line is our girls came to play today,” Guerrieri said. I think we did a good job of keep ing Nebraska off balance going into our attacks. The best news is that we are really not even into our groove yet.” Please see Aggies on Page 8. dent ID J sh ingredients 10:45-2:30,4:15-8! 10:45-8:00 Sat&S 101 S. The sophomore’s demeanor has been described as shy and quite by coach G. Guerrieri but Wilson says after one year of college play, she wants to calm her temper. “I have a bad temper that I am try ing to work on,” the Tennessee native said. "When I’m scored on or there is a bad call I need to try and stay calm. Coach G. and [assistant coach] Kat [Connorl say not to freak out and keep in the game.” Beingscored upon is not a common experience for Wilson. En route to an 18-4 season, Wilson saved 64 goals and her average was a paltry 0.95. Guerrh eri had nothing but praise for his standoit goalkeeper. *Laslyear she was probably the sin gle biggest reason for our rise from a top 20 team to a top 15 team to now a top 10 team,” he said. Guerrieri, who knows a little about goalkeeping, said Wilson was an obvious recruit because he had seen the talent and skill she had when he coached her earlier. “We recruited her basically because I saw her as the No. 1 or No. 2 goalkeeper recruit in the country,” he said. “I had the pleasure of training her since I was the goalkeeper coach with the south re gional Olympic Development training program. When it came time to recruit we went after her.” Recruiting Wilson was a priority for the Aggies. Her athleticism was her pri mary selling point. Guerrieri says Wilson is the fastest person on a team which ranks as one of the fastest in the nation. She has a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash and has a 22-inch vertical leap. “She is a phenomenal athlete,” he said. “She is ranked the best in the world at her age and she is really good with the high balls and crosses. The typical downfall of other female goalkeepers is not being able to handle the high balls and the crosses. But where others strug gle, she excels. Her athleticism helps her cover the 24 x 8 goals and she com mands respect.” Respect is something Wilson has had to earn. She knew going in that she would be able to compete for the start ing goalie position. But she also knew the position would not be handed to her on a silver platter. “He [Guerrieri] said I had a good chance and like any freshman I would have to fight to start,” she said. “When I did start I was excited but nervous at the same time. Wilson was not always a goalkeeper. As a child, she played a variety of sports and she kind of fell into the position of goalie. "I was a ball of energy and would run around and kick the ball, I loved that,” Wilson said. “When I was 11 or 12 I played on a club team in Mem phis, the goalkeeper broke her wrist. He said later that the first time he saw me I was messing around in the goal and said ‘if the goalkeeper ever got hurt she’s the one.’” Please see Wilson on Page 8. -i A&IV, goaiie Melanie Wilson has compiled 3 1/2 shutouts for the fm-rankedTgZ^ ^ COMPLIMENTARY PASSES EXCLUSIVELY FOR AMERICAN EXPRESS* CARDMEMBERS.
