A merican Techno — Huh?
Thus far, the best music in
the world belonging to the
media-labeled “electronica” has
come from Great Britain, Germany
and the Netherlands.
Vegas, the first full-length album
from ever-popular techno DJs The
Crystal Method, is a buoyant and
tantalizing album reminiscent of
the best old-school techno.
Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland
are the men behind the mixers
that make The Crystal Method
come alive.
Vegas displays a continuous atti
tude in its songs. Jordan and Kirkland
produce a general, yet specialized
style of techno that melds melodic
ambient sounding intros that leave
one feeling as if Jordan and Kirkland
have simply let you have it.
The combination of these qual
ities and the infusion of a hopped
up rock-like lyrical attack make the
album truly unique.
After having appeared on what
seems like an infinite number of
compilations and having pro
duced major underground hits
such as “Keep Hope Alive” and
“Now is the Time,” it appears as if
The Crystal Method has arrived
with a fistful of jams.
Everyone from the fledgling
“electronica” listener, to the most
hard-core techno connoisseur, can
listen to tracks like “Trip Like I Do,”
"High Roller,” “Vapor Trail” and
“Get Busy Child” have a rewarding
listening experience,while discov
ering a new form of music.

College Station that has a dif
ferent live band come in every
Thursday night. They charge a low
cover — say five dollars.
Texas Outlaw Thursday Night is
held every Thursday night at North-
gate’s Shadow Canyon Saloon.
Daniel Brightwell, manager of
Shadow Canyon, said they will
bring in a different band every Out
law Thursday.
“We’re trying to book ‘up and
coming’ bands that play an older
style of music,” Brightwell said.
Highway 6 opens the show every
week with favorites by Robert Earl
Keen, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nel
son and more, including its original
“The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Song.”
“They start playing about 9 or
9:30, depending on when the next
band goes on,” Brightwell said.
Texas Outlaw Thursday Night is
sponsored by Dickson Productions.
John Dickson, owner of Dickson
Productions, said the concerts are
centered around the students.
“It’s the quality music at an af
fordable price,” Dickson said.
“And, it’s student-oriented.” Des
ignated Outlaw Thursdays will be
devoted to fundraising efforts by
on-campus organizations.
“We already have the Aggie
Bonfire Committee, the A&M
Rodeo Club and the Parsons
Mounted Cavalry,” Dickson said.
“We’re going to try to talk to the
class councils, too.”
Brightwell said the idea generat
ed from a place in Austin.
“They used to have people like
Waylon Jennings and Merle Hag
gard every week,” Brightwell said.
Dickson said he has experienced
Bryan-College Station’s love of mu
sic first hand.
“The company I own has
brought a lot of country music
through College Station,” Dickson
said, “Guys like Chris Ledoux, Jack
Ingram and Robert Earl Keen.”
Sept. 4 was the first night of
law Thursday.
“For the first time, we had mi
700 people — a really
turnout,” Brightwell said.
