Texas A&M Bookstore Memorial Student Center L The Battalion IFESTYLES Thursday • September 11,19S Crystal Method Vegas Outpost Recording City of Angels ★★★★ (out of five) 'Outlaws’ provide weekly country musi By Brandi Ballard Staff writer V&gos holds its own By Len Callaway Staff writer A merican Techno — Huh? Thus far, the best music in the world belonging to the media-labeled “electronica” has come from Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. Vegas, the first full-length album from ever-popular techno DJs The Crystal Method, is a buoyant and tantalizing album reminiscent of the best old-school techno. Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland are the men behind the mixers that make The Crystal Method come alive. Vegas displays a continuous atti tude in its songs. Jordan and Kirkland produce a general, yet specialized style of techno that melds melodic ambient sounding intros that leave one feeling as if Jordan and Kirkland have simply let you have it. The combination of these qual ities and the infusion of a hopped up rock-like lyrical attack make the album truly unique. After having appeared on what seems like an infinite number of compilations and having pro duced major underground hits such as “Keep Hope Alive” and “Now is the Time,” it appears as if The Crystal Method has arrived with a fistful of jams. Everyone from the fledgling “electronica” listener, to the most hard-core techno connoisseur, can listen to tracks like “Trip Like I Do,” "High Roller,” “Vapor Trail” and “Get Busy Child” have a rewarding listening experience, while discov ering a new form of music.
