Texas Border Patrol
recruits new officer
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The U.S.
Border Patrol has sworn in 55 new re
cruits for use in a controversial oper
ation against illegal crossings
dubbed “Operation Rio Grande.”
But it will be five more months be
fore the recruits start work. That’s
how long it will take them to com
plete training in Spanish, immigra
tion law and other subjects at the
Border Patrol academy in
Charleston, S.C.
The recruits boost to 756 the
number of agents stationed in the
McAllen sector of die Border Patrol,
which guards 282 miles of river from
Brownsville west to Roma. That’s a 42
percent increase in staff from the pre
vious year, officials said.
The agents will provide reinforce
ment for Operation Rio Grande, an
initiative placing more agents direct
ly on the banks of the Rio Grande to
stop illegal immigration.
The operation began last month
all along the Texas border, but it is
concentrated in Brownsville, where
agents are stationed almost shoulder-
to-shoulder along a 2 1/2-mile sec
tion of river just south of downtown.
Now in its third week, the initia
tive has halted illegal cross
along that section of river. B
numbers have decreased
slightly elsewhere along the
Grande, officials said.
