Mexico accuses U.S. of violating migrant workers’ right
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Foreign Secretary Jose
Angel Gurria accused the United States on Mon
day of violating the rights of Mexican migrant
workers against standing agreements between
the two nations.
“We are seriously worried by the emergence
of operations that endanger the security and
the rights of migrants,’’ he said, referring to
stepped up U.S. actions to discourage Mexican
illegal aliens.
“Migrants are not criminals, their treatment
cannot be undertaken with police actions,”
Gurria said, in testimony before the Mexican
Senate.
He was repeating earlier complaints about
Operation Guardian in California and the more
recent Operation Rio Grande to deploy hun
dreds of troops and law enforcement officers
along most of the U.S. border with Mexico.
Gurria said Mexico is doing its besttocoi
erate with the U.S. in restricting migration,
example, he said, was new legislation that
increase punishment of people smugglers.
“We will no spare efforts to defend ourft
citizens,” Gurria said. “Mexico will do allit
