The material passing for the plot in this movie starts with Emily T. Hope (Silverstone), a prime candi date for “Poor Little Rich Girl of the Year,” faking her own kidnapping to get the attention of her father. In a twist of fate only possible in horrifically bad movies, Emily’s car, with her in the trunk, is stolen by Vincent (Benicio Del Toro). The next hour and a half sends the viewer on a ride as exciting as the merry-go-round at KMart. Excess Baggage features Silver stone running around in a tight- fitting T-shirt that gives her nip ples a real workout. No less than four times are her areolae thrust on the screen. No wonder the movie has “excess” in the title. As in all her films, her perfor mance reeks. One minute she is a little girl sobbing mindlessly, the next she tries to pull off the “tough-as-nails” act while sippim on scotch. ,1 As Vincent, Del Toro looks like he is suffering from yellow jaun-j| dice. His skin looks pale green ana his eyes have circles darker thaiy Silverstone’s overdone mascara.?] The character of Vincent is trivia} and one-dimensional, andheisjl the most interestingcharacteriiH the film. \\ Bordering on pedophilia, Ex-1 cess Baggage flirts with a juvenil| love affair between Emily andVin- cent. Every time the two loversap pear on the screen, images ofAmj Fisher and Joey Buttafuococome to mind. With at least a 15 yeardif ference between them, love scene in the film are prosecutable undei federal law. The only redeeming facet ofE cess Baggage is the directing. Mar co Brambilla seems to have a tal ent for using the camera in a variety of ways. He uses unique angles that look impressive on thi screen. 1 lopefully next time, he can find material worthy of him. Excess Baggage is the first film to be released by First Kiss Pro ductions, Silverstone’s production company. Judging by the qualitye movies Silverstone has been pro ducing lately, Silverstone’s "first | kiss” should be her last. Alicia Silverstone plays wealthy Emily Hope in Excess Baggage.
