The Battalion IFESTYLES Tuesday • Augusts,: Lollapalooza Continued from Page 3 The Concourse Billed as “artistic and environ mental attractions,” the concourse, a series of circus tents and vendors, was a dud. There were a number of ven dor booths with all the smoking devices, sunglasses and jewelry a festival-goer could handle. While there were more than 20 such vendors, they were all selling the same merchandise. This begs the question, why would Farrell invite so many different people to sell the same bongs, Oakleys and hemp necklaces? The main attractions of the concourse were “The Brainforest” and “The Greenhouse.” The Brainforest promised bril liant art, cutting-edge disc jock eys and an enlightenment about the interconnection of all living things. The Brainforest, in reality, was a small tent that provided vegetarians and those concerned with toxic waste a chance to beef up on their information. Void of entertainment value, The Brainforest gave Mr. Farrell a chance to preach to the choir. Talking to a number of festival- goers, I found none that prior to their Brainforest experience had been supportive of dioxin in the water supply. Similarly, the “More Beef?” section, which included graphic depictions of slaughterhouse techniques, will likely have little impact on the sales at McDonald’s. For Lollapalooza to survive, Mr. Farrell must return to his original recipe. With the news of a Jane’s Addiction reunion, there is an opportunity for next year’s festival to improve upon this year’s disappointment. Joy I Directed by Glen Gordon Caron Rated PG-13 Playing at Hollywood 16 * * (out of five) By Mandy Cater The Battalion "Tennifer Aniston is to twen- I tysomethings of the ’90s what I Molly Ringwald was to Brat Fuckers of the ’80s. In Picture Perfect, Aniston plays Kate Mosley, a beautiful, young advertising agent trying to work her way up the corporate ladder. Kate’s ad campaigns consistently lure in big bucks accounts, but she seems to be in a career rut. Her boss, Mr. Mercer (Kevin Dunn) only pro motes people with mortgages, fami lies or car notes — something to keep them loyal to the firm, l ie sees Kate’s freedom and unattachment as an agency risk. Meanwhile, Kate’s love life is not in much better shape. She has had a string of nightmare dates, many of which were arranged by her med dlesome mother (Olympia Dukakis). Sam (Kevin Bacon) is Kate’s co-worker and the one man she really wants to get involved with, only he’s not interested because she’s “too nice.” Kate’s best friend Darcy (Ileana Douglas) hatches a plan she thinks will remedy both Kate’s career and romantic woes. Darcy shows Mercer a picture of Kate sitting in the lap of a young man named Nick (Jay Mohr). Darcy pitches a wild tale, saying Kate and Nick are involved and plan to marry; all of this is unbeknownst to Kate, who just met Nick at a wedding the week prior. Kate decides to go along with the zany plan, landing her a promotion and interest from Sam, who appar ently adores unavailable women. Kate thinks she’s got it made until Nick suddenly becomes a front page face by rescuing a young girl from a fire. The company bigwigs want to have dinner with the loving couple, and the chaos begins. Kate is forced to track down Nick, and beg him to come to her rescue. They plan a crash history course in Kate’s life and a staged break-up at the dinner. Nick agrees, but the game turns out to be more than Kate bargained for. Picture Perfect suffers from a syn drome of many romantic comedies today — its story is stale andcai board. It seems as if Americani makers have forgotten what ii means to make a love storywoi Everything in Kate’s life isa cliche, from the overbearingr to the youthful clothes and the: chievous best friend. In ordert litep] make a love story work, viewers 1 have to be cheering for both ole lovebirds; that just does nottafp with Nick. In the end, though, this pic W enjoyable, if you don’t go in espea ing the Yikes o!i Four Funeral or When HanyMetSmi a fun date movie, but like many movies in its genre, itjustwrapsif too easily. Everythinglinishestoo simply, and the viewer is left tojffl take it at face value. In a day when sex and violence are the norm, movies like Pictun Pei feet are a welcome change, and they do seem to be making a conif- back. Hopefully, with more ences being responsive, moviesta dios will produce more quality in this genre. And while the ’90sti: yet to have a counterpart to Pretti prai Pink, Aniston’s performance leave us hopeful for the future. 111* ’ barl 'verl The} Abo] rantj thei ityicj |eye.| dial Kate (Jennifer Aniston) and Sam (Kevin Bacon) spend an afternW at a tennis match in 20th Century Fox's Picture Perfect. www.3rdixie.com Dixie Theatre 106 S.
