(AP) — Even mild cases of
endometriosis, a common disorder
of the uterine lining, can cause
infertility in women, a study found.
However, the researchers also
found that surgery to treat the
endometriosis can nearly dou
ble such women’s chances of
getting pregnant.
Endometriosis — in which the
uterine lining grows outside the
uterus, usually in the ovaries, fal
lopian tubes or abdominal cavity
— affects 3 percent to 10 percent
of all women of childbearing age.
Severe cases can be extremely
painful. But mild cases often can
go unnoticed.
Moderate to severe
endometriosis has long been
known to cause infertility, usually
by blocking the fallopian tubes or
ovaries with scar tissue.
The new study, published in
Thursday’s New England Journal
of Medicine, provides strong evi
dence that minimal or mild cases
can also cause sterility in women,
even when there are no blockages
and ovulation is normal.
Why this is so is not clear.
However, the study found that
surgical removal or destruction
of the growths increases a
woman’s chance of getting preg
nant by 73 percent over the suc
ceeding 8 1/2 months.
The study suggests that women
with unexplained infertility
should be examined foi
endometriosis in a procedure
called a laparoscopy and should
undergo surgery immediately ii
they have the condition, the
researchers said.
“It’s a very simple procedure,
said Dr. Rodolphe Maheux, chair
man of obstetrics and gynecology
at Laval University in Quebec and
one of the study’s authors. ‘Tt cat
be done in 15 minutes more that
the laparoscopy.”
Dr. Robert Barbieri, an expen
at Boston’s Brigham and
Women’s Hospital who was not
involved in the study, agreed
with that recommendation.
“With these data, more doctors
might say, ‘You might want to try
surgery first,’” instead of taking
hormones to stimulate ovulation,
Barbieri said.
Thirty to 40 percent of women
who have unexplained infertility
have minimal or mild endometrio
sis, he said.
DuPont warns states
about generic drugs

of options in Washington, a big
drug company has turned to
state legislatures in a last-ditch
struggle to stall a generic ver
sion of Coumadin, a blood
thinning medicine taken by 1.8
million people.
At stake: a $500 million a year
market for DuPont Merck
Pharmaceutical Co. The compa
ny is lobbying in at least 20 capi
tals from Sacramento to Albany
for legislation to slow down

cate, slightly too little; and it is
ineffective, slightly too much; and
it can be toxic. It is part of an
informal class called “narrow
therapeutic index,” or NTI drugs.

Skull could help identify
ape, human ancestors
NEW YORK (AP) — Researchers
have found a skull from a 15-million-
year-old monkey that suggests that a
still-undiscovered ancestor of both
monkeys and people looked different
from what many scientists thought.
“It tells us what our relative
looked like 25 million years ago,”
said researcher Brenda Benefit of
Southern Illinois University in
Carbondale.
That undiscovered ancestor
stood at a crucial split in the
evolutionary family tree. One
branch went on to produce apes
and people; the other branch led
to Old World monkeys, which
live in Africa and Asia today.
Scientists have been trying to
figure out what this ancestor
looked like.
The new finding suggests its
face looked more like an orang
utan’s than many scientists
thought, Benefit said.
The fossil, found in 1994 on
Maboko Island, Kenya, is the old
est known skull from an Old
World monkey. It came from a
creature called Victoriapithecus,
a fruit-munching, 11-pound
monkey that walked on the
ground and climbed trees.

Victoriapithecus is not an
ancestor of people, since it
comes from the evolutionary
branch of Old World monkeys.
But it’s closer than any other
known monkey to the split with
the ape-human branch, so it
probably resembles the elusive
ancestor of monkeys and
humans that occupied the split.
Benefit said.
While many scientists believe
this ancestor had a ball-shaped
skull, Victoriapithecus suggests
the skull was long and low, shaped
more like the top half of a football.
And while a popular theory says
the ancestor had a gibbon-like flat
face, the new find suggests its
snout stuck out a bit more, like an
orangutan’s or a chimp’s.
The finding will help scientists
evaluate other fossils as they try
to find the elusive ancestor,
Benefit said.
Benefit and her husband and |ni

announce the find in Thursday's |rai
issue of the journal Nature.
