He proved his point Sunday. Gonzalez homered twice, including his first grand slam in the majors, and matched his career high with six RBIs as the Houston Astros routed the Montreal Expos 9-0 Sunday and completed a three-game sweep. That was plenty for Darryl Kile (13-3), who pitched a four-hitter for his fourth shutout this season and lowered his ERA to 1.99. “For some reason, every year, something clicks in the second half,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve always seemed to hit well and hope fully this year it stays the same. The last couple ' years, this ’ team has sort of faded in the last few weeks of the season. Hopefully I can stay hot the rest of the way and maybe 1 can be that little extra push.” Gonzalez, who went 9-for-l 1 in the series to raise his batting aver age to .292, had the third multi homer game of his career and his first since April 7, 1993, against Philadelphia. He was 3-for-4, including a double. Gonzalez, who began the game with four home runs, hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Dustin Hermanson (4-5) and the grand slam off Omar Daal in the eighth. “Omar tried to sneak a fastball by me and I was able to make good contact,’’ Gonzalez said. “I felt like every time I went up there I was going to make something happen.” The Astros have gone 8-3 since the All-Star break to take a two- game lead over Pittsburgh in the NL Central. “He’s always been a very streaky hitter,” Astros manager Larry Dierker said of Gonzalez, who broke in with the Astros in 1990 and returned to Houston as I a free agent after a season half with the Cubs. “Wei® that when we got him, bi also knew his defense m always going to be there. Tfe important. His hitting is goinp come and go, but his defensi always going to be there daji and day out.” Kile struck out six ai walked one. He also went2f 3 with a double. “The last time I was heretl had a game plan against me j they knocked me around pit good,” said Kile, who suffered worst outing of the season in an loss April 30 at Olympic stadium just tried change wh r „ normally and keep lit ’’J off Fortunately f ite tM worked ( today.” ien 1 “1 was worried about thaiT av Dierker said of Kile’s previoi ■' ai 1 start at Montreal. “Havingbei pitcher, 1 know that you remea 'id her things like that. Mark Grudzielanek hit lii major league-leading 35th doukli sui for Montreal, which lost fori fifth time in seven games. “They (the Astros) found 4 0 Expos club that is limping dg) now, with injuries, slumps tiredness,” Expos managerF Alou said. “In our case, we ha get back on the winning trackani stay in the hunt for a playoffspot Sean Berry hit a sacrifice fly the second, and Craig Biggiohil) sacrifice fly in the third. Aikman hosts his own training caim aslJ Aikman AUSTIN (AP) — Welcome to Camp Aikman. Troy Aikman is finally getting what he wanted from coach Barry Switzer and owner Jerry Jones: a Dallas Cowboys camp free of dis tractions, dawn to dusk hard work and a dedicated attitude. Aikman first had a camp like that under coach Jimmy Johnson. After last year’s unhappy result in which the Cowboys were bounced out of the playoffs by Carolina a game short of the NFC title game, Aikman hinted retirement if Dallas didn’t brush up its image. “I haven’t made a decision yet about my future,” he said back in February. “Certain things need to be addressed.” They were. The Cowboys re-signed close buddy Daryl Johnston at fullback, hired Calvin Hill to clean up the team’s public image and promised a no-frills, hard-working camp. He also was not happy with a frantic preseason like last year’s, when the team played in two dif ferent countries, scrimmaged three different teams and played one more preseason game than most clubs. “There’s a fine line between being 13-3 and 8-8,” Aikman said. “We have to get the edge back.” It wasn't 8-8 for the Cowboys, but it was 10-6, not a mark to which Dallas is accustomed. Now Aikman is enthusiastic again, buoyed by the appearance of Michael Irvin in camp and the signing of free agent Anthony Miller to complement him at wide receiver. “We could have the best corps of receivers we’ve ever had," Aikman said. “In Mike and Anthony we may have the best tandem in the league. Certainly the best group of receivers since I’ve been here.” Aikman likes the healthy return of tight end Eric Bjornson praises rookie first round draft pick David LaFleur, another tight end. In fact, Aikman all but sat Deion Sanders need not won)’ about offense when he finallj reports from the Cincinnati Reds. “Deion might be able to help but it would hard because i (being a receiver) takes so mud time,” Aikman said. Aikman also has been bubbl about his future. “As long as we are a focuse football team, 1 want to be part it,” Aikman said. “I want to play long as I can. I hope what takesit out of the game is that 1 cat physically perform any more, like to play another six or sew years, but I don’t know if I cani it physically.” Aikman’s overall health is excf lent except for a calf problem ft continues to dog him to this day “I still have some proble* with a pulled calf, but it’s gressing all right,” Aikman said. Then he smiled, “Myarmissi good and healthy.” Aikman has been brilliant early training camp drills. Hisst zling passes have been on targf and he seems happy being charge of the team. “It’s critical we have a gc training camp this year,” Aikifl said. “I still feel we’re oneofaha® ful of teams who can win the Suf Bowl. You saw what happened!^ year. We had a disjointed trail*’ camp then we got off to a 1-3# We can’t afford that again.” At Camp Aikman, No. 8 is ly getting what he wants. White Sox pound Orioles BALTIMORE (AP) — Cal Ripken received a rare ejection and the Baltimore Orioles took another loss, falling to the Chicago White Sox 10-2 Sunday. Frank Thomas went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Jaime Navarro blanked Baltimore until the ninth inning, handing the AL East-leading Orioles their 10th loss in 13 games. Ripken was ejected for the third time in his career, ousted in the second inning for arguing a caP third strike. Ripken’s previousejf 1 ' tionsz occurred in 1987 and 1985 The White Sox got a run in ft first on a sacrifice fly by All* Belle, then pulled away wit* five-run second against Sha" Boskie (5-4). Norberto Martin had a two-i 1 single and Thomas hit a two* double as Chicago batted an# getting five hits and a walk.
