Junior journalism major
E very
spring
without
fail, I hear
other students
rave about the
joys of staying
in College
Station
through the
summer.
It is fabu
lous, they say. Everything is much
more laid-back and relaxed, the
clubs aren’t as crowded and the
whole atmosphere just slows down.
They said there is a party some
where every night, and people take
road trips almost constantly.
This will be great, I thought. It
sounded like the ultimate college
experience: partying and road trips.
What I forgot to consider was
school — the whole point that 1
was staying at A&M for the sum
mer, according to my parents.
No one mentioned to me that
summer school courses cover
the same material that a fall or
spring course covers, only in five
weeks. Remember how fast
Superman reads books? This is
what you have to do to keep up
in a summer course.
In my Spanish class, we had
to learn almost two chapters a
week. We covered 10 chapters
in five weeks — some of my fall
and spring classes don’t even
cover that much material in
four months. I felt like I was
being taught at the speed of
light and I just wanted to
scream, “Slow down!”
Another part of the summer
that people forgot to mention was
the incredible heat. I thought that
it was hot in April and May, but
little did I know.
I honestly believe that the sun
moves closer to College Station
during July. There is no other
way to explain this kind of heat.
Unfortunately, I am one of
those people who has to practi
cally bathe in SPF 45 sunscreen
before I set foot outside of the
house, or 1 will spontaneously
hurst into flames. As a result, I
don’t ever have a tan. I cannotte!
you how many times peoplehan
called me Snow White or toldme
that the glare of the sunoffofm
legs was blinding them. All in
good fun, of course — it's just a
joke. I guess it was sort of funny
the first 50 times I heard it, but
now it is kind of old.
A word of advice — do not take
an outdoor kinesiology course that
involves a lot of moving around.
Unless you are into sweating, savei ike|
for the fall, or take bowling or swim
ming. I learned this lesson the hard
way. If you think playing tennis at
10 a.m. in die morningwon’tbe
that hot, you are totally and com-
pletely wrong; trust me on this one.
One part of this fantastic sum
mer that people were describing
was actually true. It is a lot less
crowded around here during the
summer months.
I had never sat down at a
table at The Chicken until the
summer. It is a whole new ball-
game when you sit down —you
have to look up at people, and
you become intensely protec
tive of the chair in which you
are seated. In the fall, 1 have
seen people refuse to stand up
for fear that someone would
take their chair. In the summer,
people just roam around,
secure in the knowledge that
there will always be another
seat somewhere.
All in all, summers at A&M
aren’t really that bad. They don’t
live up to the hype, but they can be
a lot of fun if you know howto
manage your time. Just remember
to carry along the sunscreen and to
watch for those television infomer
cials on speed-reading courses,
and you will be fine.
