WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Pushed to five
sets though never broken, Pete Sampras drilled
his 28th ace Wednesday to escape the same fate as
defending champion Richard Krajicek and set up
a showdown against fellow three-time Wimbledon
champ Boris Becker.
Sampras vs. Becker is like a final in the quarters.
“It’s kind of a tough draw for both of us,’’ the
top-ranked Sampras said after beating No. 16 Petr
Korda 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (10-8), 6-7 (7-1), 6-4. “I feel
Boris, for the rest of his career, should be seeded
in the top four, no matter what he’s ranked,
because he got to the finals here seven times and
he’s won here three times.
“We’ve had some unbelievable matches in the
past. This what it’s all about for us — the
Wimbledons and the Grand Slams.”
What it’s all about for Tim Henman is an
opportunity to give British fans a men’s champion
for the first time since Fred Perry won his third
title in 1936.
Henman raised hopes by closing out a 7-6 (9-7), 6-7
(9-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 upset of the No. 4 Krajicek with a 36-
minute final set of their suspended match. Henman
broke Krajicek at love with four strong returns that the
Dutchman volleyed long or into the net to fall behind
3-2, then held serve the rest of the way, ending the
match with a put-away volley. Henman next faces 1991
champion Michael Stich.
On a cool day when the rain relented and the sun
poked through at last, the two teen-age starlets of
Centre Court, Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis,
scored impressive victories to reach the semifinals
against each other.
Kournikova, an unseeded 16-year-old playing in
her first Wimbledon, advanced 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 against
French Open champion Iva Majoli.
The No. 1 Hingis, also 16, beat a childhood friend
from the former Czechoslovakia, 18-year-old Denisa
Chladkova, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the Wimbledon quar
ters for the first time in three tries.
Kournikova showed a deft touch with drops and
volleys, plus plenty of power on returns and ground-
strokes. That combination could someday make her
a grass court champion in a league with Martina
Navratilova and Steffi Graf if she continues to devel
op and stays free of injuries.
Comparing her to other players, Bollettieri boast
ed that “Kournikova is in a class of her own.”
We’ve had some
unbelievable matches in the
past. This is what it’s all about
for us — the Wimbledon’s
and the Grand Siam’s.”
Pete Sampras
The effort of playing singles, doubles and mixed dou
bles wore down Kournikova on Wednesday. She
received treatment for a sore hip while she and partner
Elena Likhovtseva were losing their doubles match, and
she had to pull out of mixed doubles.
But Kournikova pronounced herself fit for sin
gles against Hingis, who is nursing a cold. Hingis
beat her 6-1, 6-3 at the French Open last month,
but Kournikova may have the stronger and more
creative game that can produce wins on grass.
“I played very well in Paris, but here on this sur
face I think she feels much more confident,” Hingis
said. “For sure, it’s a little different than in Paris. She
has nothing to lose, and now she has beaten a couple
of great players out there.”

Tuesday evening with a 6-4, 4-2 lead over PetrKordi ,]ai '
picked up where he left off by taking the seconds
easily. But Korda, a left-hander who has rejuvenate
his game this year after working his way backfroa l j
injuries, refused to go down gently.
Korda forced two tiebreaks, won them
and celebrated with some of the fanciest footwoit®
seen so far in the tournament when he leapedin
victory shuffle. Sampras merely shrugged anian
went back to work, breaking Korda in thefuslierj
game of the fifth set and holding serve to the end,
“I could have been a lot easier on myse
Sampras said, referring to the way he played
tiebreakers to keep the match going. He led 5-1 in
second-set tiebreaker before letting Korda backi;
it by missing a couple of first serves.
“It just goes to show on grass anything’s possi
ble out there,” Sampras said. “I mean, 5-1 intht
breaker, I was looking forward to getting into tk
warm climate inside.”
Instead, Sampras said he played “a little bit care
less,” found himself at 7-7, and hit a “tentative" sec
ond serve on set point for Korda.
“All of a sudden, he’s back into the match,"
Sampras said. “It was in my hands and I let it
away a little bit. But he still had some work to do ilk
was going to defeat me. 1 was going to continue
hold onto the serve and hopefully get a break.” I
The last thing Sampras needed was a long ma: i
the day before playing the No. 8 Becker, who c®
pleted his fourth-rounder before rain and dartos
halted play Tuesday. Sampras has won 10 ofhisll
matches against Becker, including the 1995 final and
1993 semis at Wimbledon.
Henman won his only match against Stich,on car
pet at the Grand Slam Cup last year.
“It’s not going to be easy,” Henman said, "He
announced his retirement (at the end of the year)
and I think he’s probably taken a big weight off his
shoulders. He seems to be very, very relaxed,
grass is obviously a surface that suits his game.]
be another match similar to the Krajicek one.”
Britain has another chance at claiming a champi
on if Henman is beaten. Greg Rusedski, the Canadian
turned Brit, reached his first Grand Slam quarter!
Tuesday and will play France’s Cedric Pioline,
Henman and Rusedski win, they will play each othel T|
in the semis and produce a British men’s finalist foi puti|
the first time since Bunny Austin in 1938.
The other quarterfinal pits unseeded 19-year- oil
German Nicolas Kiefer, a Wimbledon newcomeift;
against Australian Todd Woodbridge.
Woods is rested, ready
for Western Open
LEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Tiger
Woods has retooled his swing,
reshaped his putting stroke
and, he says, recovered from
an overdose of golf.
Fresh off a
week of rest
and adjust
ments, Woods
is returning
refreshed to a
sport that has
reached new
heights of pop
ularity since he
turned pro last
August.
The 21-year-old Masters
champion doesn’t necessarily
expect to win the Western
Open, which starts Thursday at
Cog Hill Golf & Country Club’s
Dubsdread course in southwest
suburban Chicago.
“If (fans) expect me to win
every week, I think that’s unre
alistic,” said Woods, who leads
the 1997 PGA Tour with more
than $1.4 million in earnings.
“I don’t expect myself to win
every week because that’s just
Woods
physically impossible. I’m
human. I’m going to make
mistakes. You can’t hit the ball
well and putt well every week.”
It’s been several weeks since
his entire game has clicked.
After shooting 11 consecutive
rounds under par — a stretch
that included victories in the
Masters and Byron Nelson
Classic — Woods has been under
par in only one of 12 rounds.
He’s a cumulative 15
strokes over par during that
span. And in his last three
tournaments (Memorial, U.S.
Open, Buick Classic), his aver
age finish was 43rd, his aver
age winnings $13,428.
“Anytime you slump, you
just go back to fundamentals.
You start from ground one and
work your way back up, and
that’s exactly what I did,” said
Woods, who skipped last week’s
St. Jude’s Classic after finishing
43rd in the Buick. “I tore my
swing apart, worked from the
ground back up. Same thing
with my putting stroke, and
yeah, it’s coming around.”
