C aution: Large doses of Wakeland may cause
drowsiness.
The band’s second album, To See the Sun, con
sists of repetitive melodies, generic lyrics and recur
ring themes of unrequited love. The moderate tem
pos and moderate musicianship have helped the
Oklahoma quartet produce a moderate album.
The songs are pleasant and catchy, but they lack
emotion. There is no feeling in the guitar riffs or lead
vocals. For an album made up of tracks about painful
relationships, the sound is amazingly upbeat.
Lead guitarist Brad Heinrichs is the songwriter for
the group, and it is evident that lead singer Chris
Sullivan is singing someone else’s songs.
From the opening “la-la”s of “That Again” to the
“doo-oo”s of the closing tide track, Wakeland presents
a chain of similar-sounding songs. The 11 tracks on the
album flow into each other so well, it is hard to tell
where one ends and another begins. After hearing the
album, listeners may find themselves humming one of

Wakeland
To See the Sun
TopSpin Records
★★ (out of five)
its tunes or singing a chorus, but it is not hard to do
after hearing the same lines repeatedly.
The band members first teamed up as studenii
Oklahoma State University, and like manyotherci
lege cover bands, started out playing bars and par
ties. The band has since signed a record deal with
Giant Records and has had songs played onepisd
of "Melrose Place” and “Malibu Shores.”
It is not surprising that Wakeland’s music wouj
find success on television shows. The band’s style!
well-suited to providing background music. The
lyrics are understandable, and the melodies arecoL]
mon. Nothing in the music would distract fromtht
show’s action, but it would provide a mellow bad
drop for TV audiences.
Heinrichs summed up the band’s style best.
“We write pop songs. Three to four minuteli
pop songs,” he said. “Critics can and do slam pop
music for their various reasons, but pop is shortfoi
popular. There are certainly enough people that
enjoy something that isn’t angry and bitter or what
ever, and I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
He is right. There is nothing wrong with music
that is not angry and bitter, but there is something
wrong with music that is devoid of emotion. It is :tl
called boring.
Wakeland should wake up and start playing ni
like it feels like playing music. Until then, the band's
sound will feel tired and so will its listeners.
