Rockets do not expect big-name draft choice Mel eingl Ml :eba[ ml FIOUSTON (AP) — Don’t look for the Houston Rockets to get a shot at any immediate impact player in Wednesday’s NBA draft, although their recent his tory shows coach Rudy Tomjanovich’s staff can uncover nuggets of talent out there. Thanks to their success, the team, which this past season made the NBA’s version of the Final Four and then lost to Utah in the Western Conference finals, won’t get to select until the 24th pick. Then, they follow with the 29th overall selection — the first pick in the second round — which they obtained from Vancouver. By then, however, any marquee names should be long gone. “When you’re at 24, you’re not at that sort of posi tion where you can say, ‘OK, we’re in the lottery. We’ve got these options,’’’ saysTomjanovich. “There are some guys in the lottery who can’t even say that this year.’’ The Rockets, though, do have some alternatives. “There’s a whole bunch of options open,’’ Tomjanovich says. “We could combine the picks and icrel ispe| try to move up or trade the first-round pick, because ^ the second-round choice we have is as good asyi can get in that round. Also, we’ll look at Europe." Of course, a number of other NBA teams have the same thoughts. “There’s not a lot going on around the leaj except for teams wanting to get rid of their late pii in the first round,” he says. Houston has picked at No. 24 before, taking Sam Cassell a few years ago. Cassell gave them a couple good years before he was packaged as part of the deal that brought Charles Barkley to Houston last summer Last year, with no selection in the first round, they iptio took forward Othella Harrington and guard Livingston both in the second round. Both made the »elci team although Livingston’s year was wrecked by knee injury. In the days leading up to this week’s M Houston has been auditioning a number of playetsllies including Keith Booth of Maryland, Anthony Pate from Bradley, Paul Grant from Wisconsin andPatfo Burke from Auburn. Dallas counting on Nelson to unearth gen,| mv DALLAS (AP) — With the sixth pick in Wednesday’s NBA draft, Don Nelson could find the exact player needed to begin turning around the Dallas Mavericks. Problem is, the pick was traded before he was hired. Instead, the 15th player taken in Wednesday’s draft will be Nelson’s first as the Mavericks general manager. He’ll also have the 35th choice in a draft many say is basically a crapshoot after slam-dunk No. 1 Tim Duncan. Dallas’ biggest needs are for a small forward and a backup cen ter. However, coming off a 24-58 season that kept the Mavericks out of the playoffs for the seventh straight year, the team could use help everywhere. “We like 17 players and we’re picking 15th,” Nelson said. “Unless 1 find a way to really screw up, we’ll get one of them.” Nelson didn’t screw up his drafts for Golden State from 1989- 92. Without a pick higher than 11 DALLAS *Wfmavericks and one of them going as low as 24, he took future All-Stars Tim Hardaway, Latrell Sprewell, Chris Gatling and Tyrone Hill. Speculation has the Mavericks eyeing San Jose State’s Olivier Saint-Jean and Providence forward Austin Croshere and Tennessee- Chattanooga’s Johnny Taylor. Nelson also may throw a curve and try bulking up the frontcourt with Tulane’s Jerald Honeycutt orfJW] State Bakersfield’s Johnny Tayk |iptjl Nelson is notorious)) tij>hV 'Qij] lipped about his decision once he makes it. But he also makes it clear that the choice is his, forbet- ter or worse. “My scouts have always done the dirty work. I’ve just been the one not afraid to pull the chain, 1 Nelson said. “My philosophy is simple don’t be afraid to take a guyy like no matter where you have take him.” While the Mavericks haven 1 picked this low since 1990, a those years of higher picks haven done much. Seven top-12 pid since 1989 have resulted in zet playoff wins for Dallas. Last year top choice, Samaki Walker, is only one still with the team. Spurs Continued from Page 3 “Those are tremendous elements to begin with in a relationship with a player,” Popovich said. “He can laugh at himself, he gets a kick out of tilings. At the same time, when it’s time to go to work, he knows it is.” He also likes it that Duncan, 21, remained in col lege until graduation. “It’s a huge plus. It shows that perseverance, that ability to not worry too much about instant gratifica tion, to understand ... a greater prize, a greater goal,” Popovich said. Under league mandates, Duncan will earn a little more than $10 million for his initial three-year contract. Though the Spurs reportedly received a call from the Celtics inquiring about a trade moments after winning the lottery, a sign of Duncan's value is apparent in how few trade inquiries San Antonio hi received, Popovich said. “It just shows that people understand how goo he is,” Popovich said, explaining it would be sens! less to even discuss a deal unless involved “a big-time trade.” Already seen by some as tl future of the San Antonio fra: chise, Duncan will be welcomed the city Thursday at a giant publ pep rally in front of the Alain 1 where he’ll be presented within team jersey. For Spurs executives and fab the day can’t come soon enough “(We) went through a horrif year, came through it with class and dignity andfc good about that, but by no means expected to paid back like this,” Popovich said. Popovich Groff Continued from Page 3 “The Big 12 was the only league to have two teams in alliance bowl games,” Groff said. The overall state of the Big 12, Groff said, is positive as the con ference has good coaches and stu dent athletes, and he said the har mony that several other confer ences around the country have developed will come with time as the Big 12 continues to grow. Like most things in life, Grol acknowledges the job contf 1 with pressure, but he supremely confident that tlb Athletic Department has tlif right people to get the job i NEW!
