Softball set for final road trip
By Nicki Smith
The Battalion
The Texas A&M Softball Team
will embark on its last Big 12
Conference regular-season stint
on the road this weekend against
in-state foes Texas
Tech University and
Baylor University.
Currently, the
Lady Aggies have an
overall record of 34-
25 and a Big 12
record of 6-8.
Head Coach Jo
Evans said both
opponents have had
good years and been
able to hold their
own against big-
name teams.
“Tech and Baylor have beaten
some really good team this year,”
Evans said. “Tech has improved
tremendously and knows how to
play well to win. Since all of us
recruit the same players, we all
think it is important to win against
each other.”
The Lady Aggies will face Texas
Tech on Saturday in a double-
header in Lubbock.
“They are a very
confident team
with a lot of
experienced
players.”
Jo Evans
Head Coach
Tech has compiled an overall
record of 34-26-1 and are last in
the Big 12 with a record of 1-11, in
part because of their current five-
game losing streak.
Despite their record, the Lady
Red Raiders do have a strong offen
sive attack. Kim
Martinez has main
tained a .503 batting
average in 177 at
bats, which ranks at
the top of the bat
ting standings in the
country.
Emily Hayes
leads the Red Raider
pitching staff, who
have been holding
opponents to a .259
______________ batting average.
Evans said the
in-state rivalry between Tech and
A&M should make the doublehead
er interesting.
“They are a very confident team
with a lot of experienced players,”
Evans said. “It is going to be very
important that we beat them
because we need to be seeded
above them in the Big 12 tourna
ment. The more games we win the
better chance we have of not hav
ing to face the top two seeds in the
Big 12 tournament.”
The Lady Aggies will continue
play Sunday against Baylor (36-19
who is riding a nine-game winning
streak.
Despite the fact they were
ranked in the top 25 this season,
Baylor remains at the bottom of the
Big 12 standings with a 3-7 record.
Senior first baseman Mya
Truelove said the Lady Aggies have
the ability to beat Baylor.
“I think they have played really
well this year and they weren’t
beat that bad by the University of
Oklahoma,” Truelove said. “They
were ranked higher than us earlier
in the year, but we know we can
beat them if we don’t take them
lightly at this point.”
The Lady Aggies are led by
freshman Jamie Smith, who has a
.335 overall batting average, and
are batting .261 as a team.
Senior Lori Gioco leads the
pitching staff with a 1.38 ERA and
120 strikeouts.
The Lady Aggies will conclude
regular-season play April 30
against Southwest Texas State
University at the Lady Aggie
Softball Complex.
Ags look to lock up post season
By Matt Mitchell
The Battalion
All good things must come to
an end, and baseball season is no
exception.
The Texas A&M Baseball Team
will play its final home series of
the 1997 season this weekend
when the Aggies take on the
Kansas Jayhawks at Olsen Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 7
Friday and Saturday nights, with
the finale slated for a 1 p.m. start
on Sunday.
The series could have serious
post season ramifications for both
clubs, as A&M currently ranks fifth
and Kansas sixth in the Big 12
Conference standings. The Aggies
are facing a week off for finals
before traveling to Lubbock to
face the top-ranked Texas Tech
Red Raiders, a series win would all
but salt away a post-season berth.
“Basically, after losing to Texas,
we want to get back on the win
ning track again,” said freshman
pitcher Chris Fulbright. “We’re
going in with the mentality of
beating these guys up pretty good,
Kirchner

“Aurora’s a lot of fun,”
Sutherland said. "She makes us
laugh a lot, so we like that. She has
a great sense of humor and loves
to have fun. I think that’s great on
any team.”
Kirchner has struggled on the
course at times this season, and
has had to revaluate her outlook
on the game.
“I had a swing change in my
short game, which kind of threw
my confidence off a lot,” Kirchner
said. “I tried harder to get better
and if you push it too hard it’s not
going to happen. You have to find
that medium.”
Kirchner said she has changed
her perspective. Rather than con
stantly thinking about how to
at least taking two of three from
them if not sweeping them.”
Freshman third baseman Sean
Heaney said the Aggies must take
advantage of their opportunities
at home while they can.
“Home series are always
important, but especially this time
of year,” Heaney said. “We need
the most of this opportunity to
play well one last time in front of
the home crowd.”
The Jayhawks (28-18, 12-12)
will meet the Aggies for the first
time since the 1993 College World
Series. Kansas is coming off a win
over Texas at home in Lawrence
on Wednesday but has lost seven
of their last 10 conference games.
Kansas has carded a 6-7 record
during the last 13 games, striking
out an average of nine times per
game and committing 35
errors.The Jayhawk pitching staff
especially has struggled recently,
giving up 70 walks, uncorking 17
wild pitches and beaning 10
opposing batters.
Fortunately for the Jayhawks,
hitting and speed on the base
paths have kept them in games.
improve her game, she said she
tries to find a balance in other
areas of her life.
“I’m concentrating better in
school and having more fun out
side of just golf,” Kirchner said.
“When I’m at the golf course, I’ll
concentrate on golf and I’ll learn
from it. But I’m not constantly
thinking ‘How am I going to get
better?’
“I feel really good now, and I
try to stay in the present.”
Sutherland said Kirchner’s
positive attitude helped her work
through her difficulties.
“Aurora can always find the pos
itive in any situation, and that
helps the team a great deal,”
Sutherland said. “She’s had some
tough times this spring. She’s man
aged to come through with a lot of
confidence and find the good
Shortstop Joe DeMarco boasts a
.400 batting average, including
.429 with 25 runs scored in his
last 20 games. He is also second
in the Big 12 with 28 stolen bases
for the year, recently stealing 24
in a row.
The Aggies (33-17, 14-10)
clubbed Sam Houston State
University on Tuesday night and
continue to be one of the hottest
teams in the Big 12, wining 11 of
their past 15 conference games.
Despite two losses to Texas last
weekend, the Aggies still find
themselves in prime position to
finish the season strong. They
realize, however, that faltering
here could have dire conse
quences when the Tech series
rolls around.
“This series is going to be
huge,” Fulbright said. “If we drop
a couple to these guys, it’s going to
be do-or-die against Tech, and
usually you don’t want do-or-die
against the No. 1 team in the con
ference. So it’s huge to get a cou
ple of games up on them right
here just in case Tech doesn’t
work out like we want.”
things from what she’s learned.”
Junior teammate Jamie Hullett
said Kirchner has evolved into a
leader and mentor for other team
members.
“She likes to voice her opinion
now,” Hullett said. “She’s kind of
taken the freshmen under her wing
and shown them how things work.”
Hullett said she believes
Kirchner’s future looks bright
because of her commitment to
improving and being the best
she can.
“Her short game has come a
long way, and she’s a great putter
now,” Hullett said. “I think if she
keeps working on that, it will give
her the confidence that she can
play good whenever we need her to.
“She plays it (golf) for fun,”
Hullett said. “She’s a real hard
worker in everything she does.”
