(AP) — Fresh snow on a steep mountainside had Air Force teams on hold Tuesday, and officials said it may be several days before they can get close enough to learn if metal debris is the wreckage of a missing warplane. And even though the sun shone through breaks in the clouds this morning over the jagged mountain, a new storm was moving in from neighboring Utah, where a winter storm watch was posted. Weather favorable for lowering a recovery team to the site from a helicopter may not come until the weekend, the National Weather Service said. Lower elevations had gotten ► This day in history more than a foot of snow in 24 hours, and no one knew how much had fallen on the 13,000-foot cliff near Gold Dust Peak, where the wreckage of the A-10 Thunderbolt is believed to lie. The snow poses an avalanche risk and also could conceal haz ardous footing, probably making it too risky for the recovery team, said Maj. Gen. Niles Running, the search commander. Monday’s blowing snow ground ed the powerful helicopter needed to lower the recovery team. There was no sign of Capt. Craig Button, who was at the controls of the $9 million plane that left a formation with two other planes over southern Arizona on April 2 and veered off to the northeast. The possible site in the central Rockies, 15 miles southwest ofVail, is some 800 miles off the course that Button wds supposed to follow. It was located Sunday when a helicopter spotted shards of gray metal near New York Mountain and Gold Dust Peak. “This is not an easy mission,” said Col. Dale Kissinger, comman der of the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland. “Since we aren’t looking for survivors at this time, we aren’t rushing it,” he said. “We are basi cally hoping it won’t take longer than a week.” Today is Wednesday, April 23, the 113th day of 1997. There are 252 days left in the year. On this date: In 1348, King Edward III of England established the Order of the Garter. In 1616, the Spanish poet Cervantes died in Madrid. The same day, William Shakespeare died in Stratford- on-Avon, England. In 1789, President-elect Washington and his wife moved into the first executive mansion, the Franklin House, in New York. In 1791, the 15th president of the United States, James Buchanan, was born in Franklin County, Pa. In 1896, the Vitascope system for projecting movies onto a screen was demonstrated in New York City. In 1940, about 200 people died in a dance-hall fire in Natchez, Miss. In 1954, Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his record 755 major-league home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Braves won, 7-5. In 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged to form the United Methodist Church. In 1969, Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death for assassinating New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment. In 1985, the Coca-Cola Co. announced it was chang ing the secret formula for Coke.
