LAWRENCE — The Texas A&M
Women’s Golf Team continued its
quest for the first Big 12 crown as
they shot a second round 308 at
the Alvamar Golf Course in
Lawrence, Kan.
The Lady Aggies are still in sec
ond place behind the University of
Texas but A&M Head Coach
Jeanne Sutherland said the team is
optimistic about their chances.
“This is still winable,” Sutherland
said. “As a team, we have to avoid
big mistakes but we’ll also have to
play aggressively. When you do that
you are walking a fine line. But when
you’re 10 back you have to shoot at
the pins and trust your game.
“After the way we started today
we know we can come back. The
three finishing holes are tough and
we need to play them well tomorrow
and maintain our focus. We played
the 18th at five over par today.”
Texas’ Heather Bowie is still in
first place after setting a course
record with a 68 in the second
round. A&M’s Isabelle Rosberg is in
second after two rounds of 148,
which is her lowest 36-hole score of
the year.
Rosberg, who was paired with
Bowie yesterday, said she was happy
with her putting improvement.
“Yesterday, I couldn’t make a

“Once I realized how benefi
cial the redshirt year was going
to be 1 enjoyed it a lot more.”
Head Coach Mark Johnson
said Malone has improved his
game since coming to Aggieland.
“He’s a better ball player all
the way around,” Johnson said.
“He’s a better defensive player
and his arm is better than it was
last year. The most notable thing
is his bat. As an outfielder/first
baseman type guy you’ve got to
have a bat unless you’re just real
ly special defensively.
“He’s having better batting
practice and giving us a feel that
he’s going to make something
happen in a game. He just hadn’t
played a lot of games yet.”
Malone made the best of the
few games he played this season.
In 32 at-bats Malone is hitting
.406 with five doubles, two
triples and 10 RBIs. But because
of a talent-laden outfield,
Malone has only seen action in
11 games, including seven starts,
mostly as a designated hitter.
Malone said he is fortunate to
have the opportunity to play.
“I was frustrated (with the
limited playing time) towards
the middle of the season,”
Malone said. “But it was from my
immaturity rather than looking
at the whole picture. I look at it
now and I’m 100 percent happy
with what has happened.
putt and today I made every putt I
looked at,” Rosberg said. “I hit 14
greens today and only seven yes
terday but I had only 26 putts, my
lowest ever and that was fun.
“This is my lowest score of the
year after two rounds so I’m
happy with my game.”
A&M junior Jamie Hullett is
tied for third, Wendi Wight is
tied for ninth, Aurora Kirchner is
tied for 22nd and Anna Becker is
tied for 51st.
“We started really well today, it
looked like we had a lot of confi
dence and some things going,”
Sutherland said. “We pulled even
with Texas about the fourth hole,
but we made some misses on the
back nine and, let it get to us.
“Isabelle played really well and I
was proud of Aurora for coming
back like she did. They both played
with a lot of determination.”
Kirchner said her putting
saved her.
“I hit some greens today and
my short game was a lot better,”
Kirchner said.
Kirchner said the Lady Ags have
a good shot in the final round to
overtake Texas.
“We’ve got to all play well tomor
row and hopefully Texas will make
some mistakes,” Kirchner said.
Play will commence at 8:50 this
morning.
“1 don’t think I could ask for
anything more than a chance
which coach Johnson gave me. I
think he made the right decision.”
Malone’s versatility may give
him more than a chance. The out
fielder has spent some time at first
base and as designated hitter.
“With 11.7 scholarships you
can’t go out and recruit a whole
bunch of guys,” Johnson said.
“The more guys you have that
can play more than one position,
the better it is for your team, and
the better the chance that guy
can get into the line up.
“We’ve been giving him a lot
of work at first base because
that gives him another shot if
someone goes down at first. Or
maybe he becomes the first
baseman. You throw the DH,
first base and outfield in and
you’ve got a guy that can fill
three different holes for you.”
If Malone continues to resem
ble former A&M standout John
Curl, he is assured of seeing
more playing time.
“When he came here his
power was to left center field, the
same as John,” Johnson said.
“They’re guys that hit opposite
field home runs and didn’t really
turn on the the ball much. He
also has the possibility of having
a legitimate home run swing.”
If Malone does develop the
home run swing maybe he can
distinguish himself from Curl
comparisons. When a clutch hit
is needed, the Aggies can bring
in Patrick ‘Mayday’ Malone.
