LAST MINUTE ORDERS ARE
NO PROBLEM
By Dennis Ramirez
The Battalion
As the skies opened up Saturday
afternoon, so did the hearts of the
Texas A&M Men’s Tennis Team as they
came up short 6-
1 against their ri
val, the University
ofTexas.
The Aggies
now fail to 8-12
on the season
and 3-5 in confer
ence play, while
the 14th-ranked
Longhorns won
the Big 12 Con
ference with a
perfect 9-0 mark and 19-5 overall.
From the minute doubles play
was postpone^ because of Mother
Nature, to when the match finally
got underway at 2:30 p.m., frustra
tion was the pace for the Aggies.
' “It was just a nightmare,” sopho
more Carlos Tori said. “Everything

“We have a really good chance
of winning it,” Kirchner said.
“We’re finally playing the way that
we’ve hoped to. We are all playing
pretty well, so it’s nice for it to all
come together at the end when it’s
really important.”
Representing A&M at the tour
nament will be senior Wendi
Wight, juniors Jamie Hullett, Is
abelle Rosberg and Kirchner and
freshman Anna Becker.
Hullett leads the way for A&M,
ranking third in Big 12 standings
and 30th in the nation, with a
76.79 average.
Hullett said the team is eager
AGGIES
Continued from Page 6
The Aggies began the three-game
series Friday night on a good note,
winning their ninth consecutive con
ference matchup, gunning down the
Longhorns 6-3. Junior pitcher Ryan
Rupe (8-2) tossed a complete game,
surrendering three runs on seven hits.
Hunter led the Aggies' offensive attack
going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run
scored. In the victory, Hunter smashed
that could have gone wrong did and
they (Texas) are a good team once
that happens. We had a lot of expec
tations going into the match today,
but we were simply not ourselves.”
No matter what seemed to go
wrong for the Longhorns, they always
found a way to salvage the point.
The Longhorns captured all the
doubles and singles matches in
straight sets, the only Aggie victory
was senior Aggie netter Robbie
Krause coming up with the win
against UT’s B. J. Stearns.
While Stearns took the first set in
the long and grueling match that
stretched almost three hours, Krause
was able to remain composed and
come back to take the match.
"It was all about pride,” Krause
said. “I am sincerely disappointed
with the team loss because we had
an up-and-down season and I
thought today might have a differ
ent outcome. As for me, I could not
have dreamt it better, I beat Texas
on my last chance here at home and
to square off with the other Big
12 schools.
“We are really excited to see
how we match up against them,
because we know we can play with
any of those schools,” Hullett said.
“We’re trying not to focus so much
on it being the Big 12, because that
makes us a little nervous.”
Sutherland said it would be
nice to win the first Big 12 Cham
pionship, but despite the confer
ence, a win is a win.
“Conference tournaments are
exciting no matter what confer
ence you are in,” Sutherland said.
“Every athlete at A&M wants to win
a (championship) ring, no matter
if it’s the Big 12 or the Southwest
Conference. There’s no more im
portance placed upon it for us that
it’s the Big 12. We still want to win.”
his team-leading 15th home run.
Garrido, who felt the Longhorns
needed to win nine of their next 12
coming into the series, said the two-
game winning streak will take some
of the pressure off his team.
“Without a question it will make us
feel better about things,” Ganido said.
“Winning and losing really affects
your attitude. Baseball is supposed to
be fun. When you get beaten, it (the
loss] frequently takes the fun out of it.
They haven’t given up. This could be
the momentum we need to turn
things around.”
