Dallas’ wayward Cowboys will soon have a whole department. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, ap parently tired of his team’s ailing im age, has launched a multi-faceted ef fort to improve player behavior, including an alumni advisory board and an orientation program for rook ies. Jones also said future player con tracts will contain character clauses. By the time the Cowboys kick off the 1997 season, the team will have at least four managers and more than 10 employees dedicated to player behavior. There’ll be depart ment managers in the areas of secu rity, player development and assis tance, psychology and spirituality, Jones said Wednesday. The wide-ranging plan was de vised by Calvin and Janet Hill. The former Dallas running back and his wife, the parents of basketball star Grant Hill, were recently hired as team consultants. “The fans of the Cowboys de serve this type of intense commit ment to good behavior,” Jones said, calling the effort a “multimil- lion-dollar commitment over a number of years.” Dallas’ image as America’s Team has taken a beating in recent years be cause of well-publicized collisions be tween Cowboys players and the law. The Cowboys also lead the league in drug-related suspensions, includ ing recent incidents involving Michael Irvin, Ix?on IxTt and Shante Carver. ‘‘We have a very keen sensitivity and feeling about where we’ve been regarding our on- and off-the-field behavior,” Jones said. Hill, a Yale graduate who played for Dallas from 1969 to 1974, said the plan is based on A&M tra has good first day Staff and Wire I Jones drug programs he put together for the Cleve land Browns and Rand Corp. Jones said the plan will be come a model for the NFL. ‘‘He’s taken that function to the next level,” said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. “A lot of clubs have one or two people charged with player pro grams and player behavior, but nothing like this.” In addition to a player-behavior department, Hill suggested an ad visory board of former Cowboys to help counsel players. Among the potential ex-Cowboys whom Hill mentioned were Roger Staubach, Pettis Norman and Jethro Pugh.
