“We are currently investigating the
mechanisms by which nicotine lowers
the BAG,” Parnell said.
Alcohol and nicotine both limit
brain growth, resulting in decreased
brain size.
Such a decrease in brain size may
include missing or underdeveloped
brain structures.
Chen explained the process of
studying fetal alcohol syndrome.
“First we identify the problems,” he
said, “and then we find the underlying
mechanisms responsible and, finally,
find ways to prevent it.”
West’s lab also has studied the ef
fects of binge drinking.
West said in most cases of extreme
child brain damage, mothers would
binge drink often.
The goal of the lab is to find ways to
prevent the occurrence of fetal alco
hol syndrome.
Chen said future experiments may
include Prozac, an anti-depressant
sometimes used by pregnant women.
Results of the experiments conducted
are used by organizations and other labs
that study fetal alcohol syndrome.
Suicide

“I wish I had the strength to have re
mained ... to have stuck it out and gotten
stronger and continued to be a part of
that group,” he told CBS’ 60 Minutes.
“I believe they are on a craft some
where, whether it’s behind the comet
or not, I really don’t know,” Cooke told
San Francisco’s KQED-FM.
Cooke and his wife left their 10-
year-old daughter Kelly behind 20
years ago to join the cult. “It was the
toughest thing that I had to do at that
point in my life,” he told 60 Minutes.
Said Kelly,“My understanding
was, it was to go to the next level, to
be with God.”
While Easter worshippers expressed
sympathy to the families left behind,
they were joyous in celebrating the bib
lical story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.
“It’s still very difficult to get (the sui
cides) out of your mind. I feel really sor
ry for the families,” said Linda Wood, a
23-year Rancho Santa Fe resident.
Like many in this affluent commu
nity of big estates on even bigger tracts
of land, Ms. Wood is tired of the media
barrage. Nonstop coverage since last
week’s gruesome discoveiy has “really
hardened us,” she said.
While Christians gave praise, fami
lies of the suicide cult members con
tinued to make last arrangements for
their loves ones. Many had been lost to
them for 20 years or more, having end
ed all communication after joining the
group founded Applewhite, aka “Do,"
and Bonnie Lu Trusdale Nettles, aka
“Ti.” Ms. Nettles died of cancer in 1985
at age 57.
Applewhite will be buried in a San
Antonio plot next to his father, a
Presbyterian minister, said sister
Louise Winant.
Only a handful of families have jour
neyed here to claim bodies, which the
medical examiner began releasing to
funeral homes Sunday.
Back at the stadium sunrise service,
Ms. Wood felt a sense of relief and re
newed faith.
“God created us. He didn’t create us
to take our lives,” Wood said.
