The Texas A&M Track and Field
teams travel to Waco for the Dr.
Pepper Outdoor Invitational.
By Jeremy Furtick
The Battalion
It looks like the weather will finally cooperate with
the Texas A&M Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
Teams as they travel to Waco for the Dr. Pepper Out
door Invitational Saturday.
Sloppy weather hindered the athletes at last week
end’s College Station Relays, a meet Head Coach Ted
Nelson calledA&M’s first major outdoor competition.
But Nelson said his teams performed well anyway and
are looking forward to a good showing at Baylor.
“We’re working on our passing of the baton in the
women’s 4x100 (meter) relay and the men’s 4x100 (me
ter) relay,” he said. “We haven’t worked on it that much
so far, and it is correctable, so I expect us to improve
this weekend.”
Nelson pointed to a few performances from last
weekend’s meet which gave him encouragement for
Waco. Seniors Anjanette Kirkland and Rosa Jolivet
sparkled in the 100-meter hurdles, while freshman
Chimika Carter also impressed him in the event.
“Chimika Carter came to the front last weekend,”
Nelson said. “She’s one of the freshmen we’re count
ing on. She finished fourth overall and just ran great.”
Kirkland said the attitude of the teams has im
proved because of their impressive performances last
weekend because of the change of venue.
“Everyone on the team feels good, everyone is
working well and everyone’s spirits are higher now that
we’re outdoors,” Kirkland said.
Junior Larry Wade, the fifth-ranked 110-meter hur
dle runner in NCAA history, will not compete in his best
event. Wade is recovering from a stress fracture in his
back which caused him to miss the 1996 outdoor sea
son. He has ran the 400-meter dash in the previous out-

“Larry may not run this weekend,” Nelsons
“I le’s still a little gimpy from his back.”
The invitational will field the men’s and won»
teams from A&M, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kan

Lady Ags head to Iowa cornfiel

The Battalion
In the heart of its season, theTexas
A&M Women’s Tennis Team (9-2
overall, 2-0 Big 12) finds itself only
three spots out of its top 20 goal, cur
rently ranked 23rd in the nation. The
Lady Aggies take their first conference
road trip as they face Iowa State Uni
versity today in Ames, Iowa, at 1 p.m.
Head Women’s Tennis Coach
Bobby Kleinecke said he has been
pleased with the team’s perfor
mance this season.
“We are a lot farther ahead than
I thought,” Kleinecke said. “With
such a young team and a lot of
unanswered questions, we have
passed every test with flying colors.”
Sophomore Monica San Miguel
said the team has stayed consistent
throughout the season and hopes to
continue to stay focused and steady.
“We have a really good attitude and
have been working hard,” she said.
“We’ve been giving it all we have every
match and it is showing in our record.”
Kleinecke said after a recent suc
cessful run following their only two
losses, it is important for the team

Solesbee then hit the ball to right
field scoring Perez.
It was all Perez again as she dou
bled to center field in the third inning.
Freshman Angie Long advanced her
to maintain its success.
“We have been playing well now
for an extended period of time and
know that is now the norm,” he
said. “Now we focus on not letting
up and meeting our potential
against any opponent.”
Although A&M is favored to win
against Iowa State, San Miguel said
there is still some pressure because
it is a conference match.
“There is something on the line
here and we want to win so we can
get well-seated at regionals,” she said.
“We have to come out and play our
game. We can’t take any team lightly.
“It is important we take care of
business.”
Kleinecke said although Iowa State
may not seem much of a threat, the
team is still going to seek a challenge.
“This is a more internal match
and a challenge for us not to play to
the level of our opponent,” he said.
With six players undefeated in
singles competition and approach
ing individual conference titles, Klei
necke said although the team’s
strength is in singles, the Lady Aggies
want to dominate overall.
“We have to make up for those
two losses and focus on doubles,
off a sacrifice bunt, and Smith brought
Perez in with a single to left field.
Although UTSA scored two
runs in the sixth inning, Tucker
stepped-up to the plate with a
home run to left field which put
the score at 3-2.
Jackson said Tucker made the
difference in the game.
