Ags try to corral
Mustangs today
By Dennis Ramirez
The Battalion
As members of the Texas A&M
Men’s Tennis Team faces old
Southwest Conference rival
Southern Methodist University
today, one thing will linger in their
minds — disappointment.
The 4-7 Aggies are coming off
a frustrating loss to University of
Colorado this weekend, a loss
Head Coach Tim Cass said
should not have been.
“The loss was very disappointing
because we put an emphasis on the
conference season, and that was
our first conference match and
those are the teams we need to
beat,” Cass said. “While it was dis
appointing, we can not just sit
around and live in the past. We
have to break out of our shells and
get things going, especially with
SMU coming into town.”
And get things going is exactly
what the Aggie netters have had the
opportunity to do. With a rather
relaxed spring break, the team has
had plenty of time to coordinate
efforts and make the necessary
adjustments to be successful.
Senior Robbie Krause said this
week has allowed the team to have
good practices and work on things
they have not had time to in the past.
“We have had some really great
practices and usually we have a lot
of matches going on and we don’t
have time to just sit down and work
on things,” Krause said. "During
the break I was able to work some
things out with Coach Cass and
that is going to help me out. As far
as the team, we have had some
extra time to work on doubles and
other fundamentals which will def
initely help us against SMU.”
While SMU may not be a Big 12
Conference foe for the Aggies,
SMU is an important regional
matchup for the team.
“SMU, like other old SWC
teams that have come in here,
come in ready to play," Cass said.
“While they don’t mean much as
far as conference is concerned,
they will have implications when
Rony Angkriwan, The Battalion
Freshman Juan Aramburo
practices at the Omar Smith
Tennis Center.
it comes down to NCAAs and the
regional competition. We just
have to be ready to play and
expect some stiff competition.”
The SMU squad comes to the
Omar Smith Tennis Center with a
mark of 5-2 and a deep roster.
Krause said he is expecting some
hard-nose competition.
“We are certainly expecting a
battle here today,” Krause said.
“They have always been a good
team and at the same time we
have always matched up well
with them. They have some new
guys which give them a few
tough top spots so we aren’t
expecting any easy matches. We
will just have to play hard and
fall back on the practice time we
have to beat them.”
Cass remains confident in the
team and expects them to match
up well with SMU and fall back on
the old rivalry that exists between
the two schools.
“I expect a lot of leveling off in the
way that we match up with them
and I expect the guys to do well,”
Cass said. “What it boils down to is
that both teams need to be ready to
go and the rivalry is going to be
strong. We need to be ready to play.”
A&M golf making
a run for the border
By Chris Ferrell
The Battalion
It will be Meximelt wishes and
Nachos Grande dreams for the
Texas A&M Men’s Golf Team as it
looks to make a run for the 45th
annual Border Olympics title in
Laredo this weekend.
The annual event, which takes
place at the Laredo Country Club,
is the Aggies’ host tournament.
Head Coach Bob Ellis said it is
one of his favorite tournaments.
“It is always a pleasure to go
down and play
in this tourna
ment,” he said.
“The people
down there
always make you
feel welcome.”
Started by
former
University of
Houston coach Ellis
David Williams
in 1952, the Border Olympics is
the second-oldest college golf
tournament in the country.
"It (the tournament) used to be
the start of your season,” Ellis said.
“Now it comes in the middle.”
A&M will look to build on its
recent success. The Aggies are
coming off a third-place finish in
the Louisiana Classics tournament
— their strongest finish of the year.
“The guys played two really
solid rounds, especially the mid
dle two rounds,” Ellis said.
Freshman Lee Reed birdied the
final four holes of the second
round to tie the tournament
record with a score of 67. The five-
under-par round helped Reed to a
sixth-place finish with a three-
round total of 218.
“Lee is an unusual player,”
Ellis said. “He’s a different player
when tournament time rolls
around. If he goes out and plays
a round when it’s not in a tour
nament, he might have trouble
breaking 75.
“Other guys play well in practice
and get in a tournament and can’t
find their rear end with both hands.”
Senior Jeff Brown (21st) and
junior Miguel del Angel (29th) also
had top-thirty finishes.
Ellis also is expecting big per
formances from sophomores
Ryan Palmer and Ty Cox.
Ellis said the team’s perfor
mance will continue to improve,
as it has throughout the semester.
The Aggies started the season
ranked 180th in holes above dou
ble bogey, but have since seen that
number cut in half.
“It doesn’t sound that good,” said
Ellis. “But if you take the whole year,
we’ve gone from being ranked 180
last semester to 90th this semester.”
As match play has improved,
their short game has remained
one of the nation’s best. The
Aggies’ chipping, putting, and
sand shots have been supreme,
ranking them fourth in the NCAA
in short-game ranking.
The Aggies are still in search of
the one player who will consis
tently step up.
“Someone needs to get hot,”
Ellis said. “We need a player who
can go out and consistently shoot
a 67, 68 or 69.”

The Phillies’ only bona fide
starter is Curt Schilling, and he
has recently cut off contract
negotiations with Philadelphia
and demanded a trade before
the season begins. Mark
Portugal and Mark Leiter will
make the latest stop on their
major league tour, while Mike
Grace, Tyler Green and Edgar
Ramos will battle for the last
two spots in the starting rota
tion. The club has a good clos
er in Ricky Battalico, but he
will be severely under-used
and probably traded in the
playoff drive.
New manager Terry
Francona, who coached Michael
Jordan while with the
Birmingham Barons, will need a
miracle to win 70 games.
Projected Record: 67-95
Key Series: Sept. 23-25 vs.
Atlanta Braves; Sept. 26-28 vs.
Florida Marlins: The Phillies
have the distinction of being a
playoff tune-up in the last two
series of their miserable season.
