One dead, unmutilated cockroach. Something little, yellow and different. What do all these things have in common? They are all on this year’s AggieCon Scavenger Hunt. Among the items that did not make the Scavenger Hunt list this year are Bevo’s horns (because someone might actually bring the real ones) and Reveille (because last year the Corps of Cadets was a little upset, even though the dog was escorted all the way through the hunt). Christy Cooper, a Cepheid Variable member and a junior chemical engi neering major, said the reason the or ganization decided to remove Reveille from the list was because they had al ready done it — they wanted some thing new to look for. In fact, there are quite a few sur prises at this year’s AggieCon. This is the first year the convention will play host to sanctioned tourna ments of popular computer games like Quake and Warcraft. AggieCon XXVIII also will be the first convention to officially enact a Live Action Role Playing Game (LARP). R. Talsorian’s Dr. Falkenstein will turn three floors of Rudder Tower into a Hinden- burg-style dirigible. The advan tage of LARPs over regular role- playing games is that instead of using imaginary characters who perform imaginary deeds, partici pants must act out the actions and instructions themselves. There will still be plenty of standard role-playing games as well, and one Cepheid Variable member predicts that “no matter where you look — if there’s room on the floor—people will be playing games.” This year’s AggieCon also boasts a phone interview with reclusive sci-fi veteran Arthur C. Clarke, to go along with a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although Cepheid Variable members say it was coincidence, this year’s AggieCon appears to be more comic-book oriented than it has been in past years. Most of their numerous speakers special ize in comic books. Two of the most noteworthy speakers will be Dave Dorman, an artist for Star Wars comic books, and Brian Stel- freeze, an artist for Batman and Maximum Velocity. Even with comic book bigwigs, folks like Cepheid Variable member Marghein (who says he “doesn’t do comics”) are still excited about this year’s convention. “It is a time when people can see and talk to other people they normal ly wouldn’t get a chance to meet,” said Marghein, a freshman computer sci ence major. Students also can catch one of the midnight screenings of the Rocky Hor ror Picture Show at the Grove. In the massive Dealer’s Room, one can search for deals on favorite comic books, memorabilia, artwork and col lector’s merchandise. The room also is rumored to have loads of free mer chandise to give away to anyone who is interested. There also will be a room com pletely devoted to Japanese anime. It will feature everything from anime classics to the newest works from up- and-coming artists. At 4:30 p.m. Saturday there will be a free auction to benefit the local char- lames Palmer,' ity Scotty’s House.
