He said he plans to go to law school in Austin after he graduates. Current Deputy Commander Cindi Ericson, a senior in ternational studies major, said she is proud of the cadets that applied for the positions. “I am very confident that they will pick up where we have left off,” Ericson said, “and cany it one, two, three, who knows how many steps further.” Ericson commented about the experience and goals of the Corps members. “Every freshman comes in the Corps with the idea in the back of his or her mind that one day he or she may be that Corps commander,” Ericson said. Ericson said she plans to graduate in May and begin four years of active duty in the U.S. Army in air defense artillery at Fort Bliss, El Paso. Five other leader positions filled were: • Wing Commander—Randall L. Schmedthorst • Regimental Commander—Jeffrey J. Broaddus • Combined Band Commander—Clayton J. Lower Fraternity Continued from Page 1 the Chapel Continued from Page 1 “We have small group Bible studies in the Meditation Room of All Faiths,” Yates said. The chapel, originally caUed the Interfaith Chapel, was de signed by architect Richard Vrooman, Class of ’52, and complet ed in 1957 with funds raised by the Association of Former Stu dents. It is maintained with funds provided by the University and regular donations from A&M Mothers Clubs, Wright said. All Faiths Chapel is open for worship 24 hours a day except during the Christmas holidays. It has a sanctuary, meditation room, library and reading room. The program for the May 10,1958, dedication ceremony de scribed the chapel’s physical appearance. “ [All Faiths Chapel is] more like a shelter in a garden than an enclosed building, fitting among the existing trees and being vi sually open to the interior court or garden,” the program said. “The friendship aspect toward brothers won’t change,” he said. The national fraternity has yet to make a decision on the incident, Bethel said. “They’ve (the national organization) been supportive,” he said. “They’re trying to do what’s best for the national fraterni ty and our chapter as well.” After the fraternity receives a formal letter of sanction from the IFC board’s chief justice, they can file for an appeal-in- writing. If the appeal is processed within five days, the suspension will be in abeyance until the out come of the appeal. Two separate charges were brought against the fraternity, violations of the IFC alcohol and recruit ment policies. During the investigation conducted by the Universi ty, it was learned that a keg of beer was in the fraterni ty house at the same time that the hazing incident oc curred. Walker’s death prompted the Brazos County Sheriff’s Department toconduci an investigation, since the departmentis required by state statute to investigateanv unattended death. Chris Kirk, Brazos County sheriff, said the suspicious circumstances surround ing Walker s death were the groundsofthf investigation. “The investigation is rooted to the un explained and unattended death oflrey Walker,” Kirk said. The fraternity violated the IFC recruit ment policy by extending bids to students not enrolled at A&M. On the same day of the hazing inci dent, William Walker III, a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity pledge, died at Columbia Medical Center in College Station after suffering an acute asthma attack. Kirk said if a criminal offense was committed the prosecuting attorneys will need to determine if it will be classi fied as a felony or misdemeanor offense. “But there is also the potential thatthe decision will be made that there isn't a criminal offense,’’Kirk said. Lanita Hanson, coordinator of Greek Affairs and assistant director of student activities, said if there are similar hazing activities taking place in other fraternities, they need to be stopped. “I think it continues to be an issued education and commitment on the part of the members to enforce their on rules and stand up for what’s right,” Han son said.
