Harte-Hanks to sell
news organizations
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Harte-Han
ks Communications Inc., created 70
years ago from newspapers in San
Angelo and Abilene, said Wednesday
it would seek to sell its remaining
television station, six daily newspa
pers and 25 non-daily publications.
The divestiture, if carried out,
would leave the company focusing on
its direct marketing and shopper
businesses, which account for 75
percent of its revenues, said Larry
Franklin, Harte-Hanks’ chief execu
tive officer.
“While obviously this was a diffi
cult decision to make, we are con
vinced it is the right one for all our
stakeholders,” Franklin said.
Harte-Hanks has retained Don
aldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities
Corp. as its financial advisor in the
transactions.
The daily newspapers include
five in Texas — the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times, Abilene Reporter-
News, Wichita Falls Times Record
News, San Angelo Standard-Times
and Plano Star Courier — as well as
the Anderson Independent-Mail in
South Carolina.
Harte-Hanks also owns KENS-TV,
the CBS affiliate in San Antonio.
“We are very proud of the contri
butions all our newspapers have
► Weather
made over the years to their com
munities and the newspaper indus
try,” Franklin said. “Likewise, KENS-
TV is one of the premier television
stations in the nation and a proud
part of Harte-Hanks for over 30
years,” he said.
Harte-Hanks prefers to sell its
newspaper operations to a single
buyer, Franklin said, adding that the
television station could be part of
that transaction or sold separately.
The company said although it will
pursue the sale of its newspapers
and television station, there are no
assurances they will be sold.
Since going public in 1993 for the
second time, Harte-Hanks’ direct
marketing and shopper businesses
have grown.
“We have found that these busi
nesses, particularly direct marketing,
are very different from the newspaper
and television businesses, which by
their nature serve local markets,”
Franklin said.
