Alleged hazing case
ends in settlement
AUSTIN (AP) — The parents of a
University of Texas student who died in
an alleged 1995 hazing incident have
settled their lawsuit against the now-
defunct school spirit group their son
had hoped to join.
Gabe Higgins, 19, died after a
night of drinking at a Bastrop County
property, south of Austin.
His parents say before Higgins’
death, the University of Texas Cow
boys group subjected him to a night
of drinking games and demeaning ex
ercises before an earlier morning
swim in the Colorado River.
Members of the group searched
for Higgins for about nine hours be
fore calling police. They have denied
any hazing.
No criminal charges were filed
against members of the group, but
Higgins’ parents sued 18 students
and the owner of the Bastrop Coun
ty property.
They agreed to a $1.09 million
settlement, the Austin American-
Statesman reported Monday.
Officers fired after
giving kids alcohol
PLANO, (AP) — One policeman
was fired and five others were disci
plined after a monthslong internal in
vestigation revealed several officers
provided alcohol to minors in the Ex
plorer program.
The program, under the direction
of the Boy Scouts of America, pro
vides young adults high-school age
and older with exposure to law en
forcement and other careers. Partic
ipants receive training on topics in
cluding drug and alcohol abuse,
physical and emotional abuse, and
leadership.
UT stadium receives
support from Senate
AUSTIN (AP) — The University of
Texas’ plan to expand its football sta
dium got a boost with a Senate vote
to exempt the project from a law pro
tecting views of the state Capitol.
The Senate voted 31-0 Monday
for an exemption bill sponsored by
Sen. Ken Armbrister, D-Victoria.
The measure now goes to the
House for consideration.
University of Texas regents last
year approved the expansion plan for
Royal-Memorial Stadium, which is
north of the Capitol.

Schindler's tops list
for Sunday night
NEW YORK (AP) — Viewers over
whelmingly endorsed NBC’s airing of
Schindler’s List Sunday, making it the
night’s overwhelming favorite.
With ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox
claiming a combined 75 percent
share of all viewers watching televi
sion, Schindler’s List attracted 34 per
cent, according to NBC’s analysis of
preliminary Nielsen figures.
The film aired from 7:30 to 11
p.m. EST. Its closest head-to-head
competition was CBS’ Touched By an
Angel, from 8 to 9 p.m. EST, which
drew an 18 percent share.
An estimated 65 million people
watched all or part of the film, NBC
estimated — more than double the
25 million people in the United
States who have seen it in theaters.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, it
won seven Academy Awards.
'Stupid Human Trick'
catches Late Show eye
CHICAGO (AP) — When Kimberly
Goodman auditioned for David Letter-
man’s “Stupid Human Tricks,” wit
nesses screamed.
The young woman got the job the
moment she literally popped one of her
eyeballs out of its socket. She can do
both orbs simultaneously, but under
statement worked just as well.
“As soon as I saw it, I thought,
‘That’s it, stop the presses,” said Tricks
coordinator Susan Hall Sheehan.
“However many people there were in
the room, that’s how many involuntary
screams there were.”
Letterman was so impressed he
invited her back for a return en
gagement, Monday night’s Late
Show with David Letterman Video
Special III.
Goodman, who is from Chicago’s
South Side, considers her quirky talent
a gift. “At church, I always hear my pas
tor say everybody has a gift, and I used
to ask, 'Lord, what’s mine?”
She found out about five years ago
when one of her eyes came out of its
socket when she hit it while taking off
a Halloween mask.
