The Battalion
What is Hollywood’s obsession
with saving dogs’ lives? In the past
year, no less than three mediocre
films {ID4, Twister and Daylight)
have gone to extreme measures to
insure the survival of a dog during
a cataclysmic disaster. Dante’s
Peak follows suit — it’s a bad film
with a rescued dog.
The plot of Dante’s Peak fol
lows the standard natural disaster
movie format. Volcanologist Har
ry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) warns
a town of impending disaster
from the otherwise friendly
neighborhood volcano. Despite
his evidence, the town chooses to
ignore the cries of our scientifical
ly inclined hero, except for the
sexy yet sensibly dressed Mayor
RachelWando (Linda Hamilton).
After the foretold disaster occurs,
citizens learn to never doubt a
man with a seismograph.
The makers of Dante’s Peak at
tempt to bring a level of complex
ity to the movie that does not
have time to develop. Issues such
as the death of a loved one, a fa
ther’s abandonment, the pain of
divorce and the instability of a ro
mance seem pointless, especially
considering there is a volcano
erupting in the backyard. With too
many loose strings and plot diver
gences, the story never really gets
a chance to work.
The stars of the film are ap
pealing. Hamilton and Brosnan
make a handsome couple, but the
pesky volcano gets in the way of
their courtship. The developing
romance works, though, because
of the respective ages of the stars.
Brosnan’s age lends credibility to
his profession and his desire for
romance. Hamilton’s age works
incredibly well with Brosnan’s.
She lends a sense of maturity that
allows the love interest to work.
The supporting characters of
the film follow stereotypes so reli
giously, an after-school special
seems more inventive.
The volcanology team that
works with Dalton seems trans
planted straight from the storm-
Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton run from disaster in Dante]
chaser team in Twister, complete
with a frizzy-haired nerd and a
frumpy female scientist.
The two children of Mayor
Rachel Wando have the typical
emotional expressions child ac
tors have — they smile really big
or cry really loud. Director Roger
Donaldson gives the children a
squeaky clean image that would
make Wally and the Beave cringe.
The citizens of the town seem
to be from the dan of people in
Galveston who refuse to evacuate
when a hurricane comes, be
cause, “Ain’t nothing happen
me or my house, yet.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It’s Mardi Gras time!
In Seattle, St. Louis, Galveston and Pensacola. In
Dunedin, Fla., St. Mary’s, Ga., and Norman, Okla.
NOR-man, OHa-HOMA?
Yep. It seems that every Tom, Jacques and
Harriet wants in on the fun.
Jeanne Flanigan, owner of Flanigan’s Cos
tumes and head of Norman’s Mardi Gras, burst
into laughter when a reporter called from New
Orleans. It is a common reaction among people
who run the less-known celebrations.
“It’s kind of dinky compared to what is going on
there,” Ms. Flanigan conceded. "We wanted some
thing to cure the winter blues, so we created this.
“We started off with about 35 people in the
parade and 35 people watching it. It goes around
the block, so our crowd of people followed us
around the block the first year.
“Now we have about 200 people in the parade
and maybe 3,000 or 4,000 people watching. We
have a full-blown ball after the parade now in
stead of private parties.”
Mardi Gras parades and balls have been fix
tures in New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., for genera
tions. Seattle is celebrating its 20th annual Mardi
Gras, St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood, its 18th.
But even Mobile, which claims to have been
celebrating Mardi Gras since the 1700s, and New
Orleans, where a disorganized street procession
was noted in 1827, are late to the parade.
After all, the Louisiana Territory was not
claimed for France until 1682. Binche, Belgium,
dates its first Carnival celebration to 1394.
In Rome, they say Carnival—from the Latin for
“farewell to the flesh,” in preparation for Lenten
austerities — dates to the second century, when
Bacchus and Venus were deities for many people
rather than Carnival parade groups.
These days, in New Orleans, Carnival is a
thoroughly secular bacchanalia, a drunken
$440 million party attended by millions. Private
groups in New Orleans and surrounding
parishes put on dozens of parades in the two
weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, and a half-
dozen on the day itself. People who ride the
krewe floats buy plastic beads, aluminum dou
bloons and other trinkets to ’toss to the miles
and miles of crowds.
Other cities around Louisiana hold parades or
“courirs du Mardi Gras” — drunken horseback
rities around the countryside to gather chid
sausage and other ingredients for a com:
gumbo. Mardi Gras is a state holiday.
Norman’s Mardi Gras is more downhi
and less serious than most New Orleans pan
