(AP) — Bomb ings at a courthouse and bank were aimed at subverting a drug trial by disrupting the criminal justice sys tem, police said Monday after ar resting two of three suspects. The third suspect, Kevin Lee Robinson, 29, of Vallejo, hired the two other men to try to prevent his upcoming trial on narcotics charges, Lt. Ron Jackson said. Be cause of prior convictions, he faced the possibility of life in prison un der the state’s “three strikes” law, Jackson said. Robinson, who was considered armed and dangerous, was expect ed to surrender today through his attorneys, said agent Mike Morris sey of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms bureau in Sah Francisco. Jackson said Robinson has had previous drug and firearms convic tions and was scheduled to begin trial today for cocaine possession. Federal agents recovered 500 pounds of stolen dynamite, an amount that Police Chief Robert Nichelini said could easily have made the series of bombings catastrophic. They were still searching for an other cache of explosives, possibly up to 100 pounds. All three men face felony con spiracy, burglary and explosive de vice charges, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent Charles Barnett said Sunday. If convicted, each could face prison sentences of 160 years. Francis Ernestberg, 40, was ar rested early Sunday in a residential neighborhood in this city of 112,000 people, 37 miles northeast of San Francisco. Oston Osotonu, 24, was taken into custody at a nearby mo tel that afternoon, authorities said. Both men have police records, but Ernestberg “was the one with the construction background relat ed to the dynamite,” Jackson said. Investigators found more than 60 sticks of wired dynamite in the trunk of a car parked outside an apartment complex early Sunday morning, police Sgt. Dave Johnson said. Authorities believe the sus pects planned to blow up the car. That evening, investigators stormed the home of a relative of one of the suspects, uncovering 500 pounds of dynamite and a semiau tomatic rifle in the garage, police said. Authorities evacuated a 20- square-block residential area for about four hours. “They told us just to get in the car and leave for a little while and take a ride because there were explo sives in the house,” said Pamela Billups, who lives next door with her husband and six children. If detonated, police said the ex plosives could have leveled much of the neighborhood. I^ast Thursday, a dynamite bomb tore a 3-foot crater into the Solano County courthouse. On Jan. 26, a stick of dynamite exploded outside a Wells Fargo bank branch, damaging three automatic teller machines. One day earlier, children found a backpack stuffed with 30 sticks of dynamite leaning against a section of the county library that houses police evidence. That bomb, safely dismantled, helped lead investiga tors to one suspect, police said. The bombers used the same dynamite for the courthouse and library, investigators said. They said the suspects may have bombed the bank to throw detec tives off their trail. Bodies have signs of Dr. Kevorkian PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — The bodies of two women were left at a hospital and outside a medical examiner’s of fice early Monday, and police were try ing to determine whether Dr. Jack Kevorkian was involved in the deaths. Authorities have neither con firmed nor ruled out a possible Kevorkian involvement. “It could have been a colleague or someone who is now following in his footprints,” said sheriff’s Capt. W. Barnett Jones. “We’ve got to put to gether hard evidence linking Dr. Kevorkian to this incident.” One body was left at Pontiac Os teopathic Hospital at about 12:30 a.m. Emergency room Dr. Robert Ara- nosian said a woman drove up to the emergency entrance and sought help getting her friend’s body inside. The other body was found at about 2:30 a.m. in Kevorkian’s bat tered, white 1968 Volkswagen van, parked outside the county medical examiner’s office. Authorities said they were trying to reach Kevorkian for help in identifying the woman, who was carrying no identification but was described by police as be tween 60 and 70 years old. “It looks like it has the touches of Dr. Jack Kevorkian,” sheriff’s Sgt. James Sutton said. “It looks like it’s Dr. Jack’s van, and we’ve seen the van before." The retired pathologist has left bodies in the van before. Kevorkian’s attorney Geoffrey Fieger said he was unaware of his client’s involvement in either case.
