Register now! 845-1631 Page 5 Monday • January 27, 1997 JED Weekend box office tied at top LOS ANGELES (AP) — In Love and War tied with Jerry Maguire and Beverly Hills Ninja for first place at the box office during the Super Bowl weekend, according to indus- try estimates Sunday. “It’s a very tight weekend,” said Ed Russell, executive vice president of publicity for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Cos. The three films were projected to bring in $5.9 million each, al though Sunday’s televised Nation al Football League championship made it difficult to project audi ence sizes. In Love and War, which stars Sandra Bullock and Chris O’Don nell in a story of a young Ernest Hemingway’s romance with a nurse, had the best per-screen av erage in its first weekend of wide re lease at $3,665. Beverly Hills Ninja, a martial arts spoof starring Chris Farley, averaged $2,892 per screen while Jerry Maguire, with Tom Cruise as a sports agent, took in $2,673 per screen. Also opening in the top 10 were Fierce Creatures, a reunion of the cast from A Fish Called Wanda in a nonsequel comedy about a zoo, and Zeus and Rox anne, an animal pal story about a dog and a dolphin. The top 10 films and their esti mated grosses for Friday through Sunday, with final figures to be re leased Monday: \. Jerry Maguire, $5.9 million. 1.
