Entering competition as the
underdogs, the Texas A&M
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Teams proved it would not give
up without a fight.
The Aggies faced the No. 2
University of Tennessee
Volunteers in their tenth dual
meet of the season Thursday. After
a shaky first half, A&M came back
strong, finishing closely behind
Tennessee, 129 to 102.
“This was definitely a chal
lenge,” A&M Head Men’s
Swimming Coach Mel Nash said.
“It was a major step up for our
guys and I am really pleased.”
A&M produced impressive
times in two challenging races in
the last events. Freshman Matt
Rice finished in first place in the
200-meter breaststroke with a
time of 2:06.74. The A&M relay
team, consisting of sophomores
lerrod Kappler and Ryan Slater
and freshmen Michael Colligan
and Keven Kehlenback, gained 11
points for the Aggies in the 200-
meter freestyle relay with a first
place finish at 1:22.80.
The diving team had successes
of its own. Sophomore Mark
Naftanel finished first in both div
ing events — the one-meter and
three-meter competitions.
“Mark had a great day,” A&M
Head Diving Coach Kevin

The Texas A&M Women’s
Basketball Team (6-7, 0-3) will
look to get back on the winning
road when it welcomes the
Oklahoma State Cowgirls (10-3, 2-
1) to G. Rolle White Coliseum
Saturday at 7 p.m.
A&M Head Coach Candi
Harvey said the Lady Aggies, who
have lost five straight, have been
encouraged by their play over the
last few games and are primed for
a breakout performance.
Harvey said the team has
shown flashes of brilliance at
times but was not able to put
together two consistant halves.
“If we can put two halves
together, even as young as we are,
as little as we are, with all the defi
ciencies we have, we can still com
pete in this league,” Harvey said.
“We need to do what we did in the
first half against (the University of)
Texas. That was ironically our
worse loss of the year as far as the
score was concerned, but it was
our best first half of the season.”
A&M was able to stay with Texas
early by staying within the offense
and using good ball distribution to
create shots, something that will bt
key against Oklahoma State. rpi .
“We have to work together bet I rJ6 DCS
ter,” freshman forward Ker<
Alexander said. “Too many time!
we’re trying to do it one on one,b)
ourselves when instead, w
should pull together and use ead

Brown said he was proud of
Jolivet for keeping her commit
ment to A&M.
“We are so happy she stayed
loyal to A&M and came to com
pete for us after her two years in
Odessa,” Brown said. “She has the
athleticism and tools to help her
to continue to get better and to
reach her fullest capabilities.”
Although Jolivet captured
first-place Southwest Conference
titles in the 100 and 400 hurdles
along with three third-place SWC
relay titles at the last Southwest
Conference Championships, she
said she has even higher hopes
for this season.
“I really want to place in the
top three at nationals in the 100
hurdles by breaking my time of
7.71,” Jolivet said. “As far as
relays are concerned, I usually
get very nervous so I never can
tell how good or bad I will do
until I run. For the most part
though, I want to help add depth
to the team and occupy the link
they need by competing in dif
ferent events.”
