49ers' Seifert retires; Cal coach takes reigns
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — George
S£ifert, who coached the San Francisco
49ers to two Super Bowl titles, is retiring
today and will be succeeded by California
coach Steve Mariucci.
“It’s true,’’ said defensive tackle Dana
Stubblefield, who watched as Seifert
walked through the 49ers’ executive
offices, saying good-bye to team personnel
and thanking them.
The retirement of the coach with the
highest winning percentage in NFL history
was to come at an 8 p.m. EST news confer
ence. The team would not disclose the
nature of the news conference, only to say
the major announcement concerned “own
ership and management.’’
However, Green Bay quarterback Brett
Favre, who worked with Mariucci when the Cal
coach was a Packers assistant, confirmed the
hiring. Favre said he spoke with the coach’s
wife, Gayle.
“I think it shows that players like him and
that’s carried over in an organization that
believes that he can relate to his players,’’
Favre said from Green Bay, Wis., where his
team is preparing for the Super Bowl. “Plus,
he’s a good offensive-minded coach.”
Seifert, 57 next week, won Super Bowls in
1989 and 1994. He finished his eighth season
as 49ers coach with a 35-14 NFC divisional
playoff loss at Green Bay.
With a record of 108-35-0, Seifert is the fran
chise’s all-time winningest coach and has a win
ning percentage of .755. He reached 100 wins
faster than any NFL coach.
Mariucci, 40, has been coaching for 18 years.
He finished his first season at Cal with a 6-6
record and a loss to Navy in the Aloha Bowl. He
was an assistant for four years with the Packers,
working with quarterbacks and getting much of
the credit for turning Favre into a two-time MVP.

Allan Houston scored 20

“It’s a matter of pride. Last night
we got embarrassed.”
New York, which won for the

Barone said
foul trouble
combined with
tired players
were the deciding factors in
overtime.
"We were dead tired — we were
worn out,” Barone said. “We were
in foul trouble and we had kids
like Tracy Anderson who had

played 40-something minutes, so
they were dead.”
The screaming, sell-out
crowd cheered the Aggies
every turn, and the hustling
cagers did not disappoint.
“It was great,” Quesada said of
the crowd. “I would love to have
that kind of crowd every single
game. It really picks you up when
you are down, whenever they
make a basket to hear them cheer
ing for you. It really helps.”
A&M fought to the bitter

Free throws

Texas was able to capitalize on
free throws once again toward the
end of regulation when Freeman hit
two shots from the stripe to give
Texas a 72-70 lead. A&M tied on its
next possession to send the game
into the extra session.
Throughout the game, the
Aggies were forced to struggle for
every point, getting to the foul line
only 24 times where they convert

Although A&M was able to fight
through the fouls on the scoreboard,
the calls eventually caught up with
the Aggies on the floor when Davis
and freshman guard Jerald Brown,
who each played vital roles in the
team’s comeback, and junior center
Dario Quesada all fouled out with
the game on the line.
“Obviously we had 10 players,
so we got tired,” Quesada said.
“But I think it was more of the
foul problem.”
