Defense rests in civil trial
Thirty newly-revealed photos show Simpson in 'ugly-ass' shoes
SANTA MONICA,. Calif. (AP)
-In his civil trial, O.J. Simpson
has employed some of the same
themes that got him acquitted of
murder: claims of conspiracy,
corruption and contamination
of evidence.
But a new “C” has been
added — credibility.
Simpson has pitted his credi-
oints overafw bility against that of Nicole
Brown Simpson, asking the jury
to believe his tale of a blissful
marriage and reject her claims
of abuse.
The most crucial new ele
ments were Simpson’s own testi
mony and photographs which
were either unused or unavail
able during the criminal trial.
“This case may very well
come down to a photo finish,”
said Loyola University Dean
Laurie Levenson, who has been
observing the trial. “Which pic
tures do you believe?”

The defense rested Tuesday
after 39 witnesses and 14 days of
testimony. The plaintiffs started
calling their rebuttal witnesses
immediately. Closing arguments
in the wrongful-death case are
scheduled for next week.
Just before Thanksgiving,
when confronted with a photo of
him apparently wearing Bruno
Maglis — the same kind of shoes
that made tracks around the
bodies of Ms. Simpson and
Ronald Goldman — Simpson
branded the picture a fake. Earli
er he said he would never wear
such “ugly-ass” shoes.
Over the Christmas break, the
plaintiffs came up with 30 more
photos appearing to show Simp
son in the same shoes. Confront
ed with the pictures, Simpson tes
tified: “I didn’t wear those shoes.”
“Do you have any explanation
for why all these photographs
show you wearing those shoes?”
plaintiffs’ attorney Daniel, Petro-
celli asked.
“No,” Simpson said.
Johnnie Cochran Jr., who
headed Simpson’s “Dream Team”
in the murder case, said he was
troubled by tlie pictures.
“We didn’t have those in the
criminal case, and the question is
quite simply whether they’re le
gitimate, whether the pho
tographs are fakes or they’re legit
imate. And only the jury is going
to make that decision,” Cochran
told a Boston radio station.
The defense fought back with
its own startling photos — of the
bloody gloves. One picture
showed an apparent hole in a
crime scene glove — a hole
nowhere visible on the glove giv
en to the jurors. Defense attor
ney Robert Baker suggested
there had been a sinister switch.
Then there were the bloody
crime scene photos. Defense
forensic wizard Henry Lee held
up his magnifying glass and
showed jurors a new trail of sev
en blood drops leading away
from the scene. This supported a
two-killer theory.
“The defense managed to
raise some mystery, which never
hurts,” Levenson said. “You have
to give them credit. They didn’t
roll over and die after the Bruno
Magli shoe pictures.”
The defense’s secret weapon,
of course, was Simpson and his
much-vaunted charisma. He
didn’t testify at his murder trial,
and his first turn on the stand in
November was under hostile
questioning by the plaintiffs.
But Friday, under friendly
questioning, it appeared he
would charm his way through.
Simpson portrayed himself as a
loving husband mystified by his
wife’s mood swings in their final
months together.

Many Texans left powerless by storms
HOUSTON (AP) — The recent frigid
weather loosened its grip on ice-crusted
South Texas as temperatures began inching
above the freezing mark Tuesday, but more
than 100,000 residents remained cold and in
the dark because of power outages.
The cold wave and ice storm that swept
across the state beginning over the weekend
is blamed for at least 13 deaths, most of
them in traffic accidents, authorities said.
Some roads and highway bridges re
mained treacherous as far south as Kenedy
County, just north of the Rio Grande Valley,
but there was no repeat of Monday’s hun
dreds of collisions.
Improving conditions allowed state trans
portation officials early Tuesday afternoon
to reopen for the first time in 20 hours a 200-
mile stretch of Interstate 10 in West Texas,
from Junction to Fort Stockton.
In Houston, people downtown had a new
hazard to consider — ice falling from the
city’s skyscrapers. As temperatures rose, ice
that had coated the exterior of buildings be
gan tumbling to the streets.
Barricades were erected on sidewalks
around the 75-story Texas Commerce Tower,
the tallest building in the Southwest, and the
35-story angular twin-tower Pennzoil Place
across the street to keep pedestrians from be
ing pelted by the flying chunks of ice.
In Austin, the Texas legislature began its
biennial session, but the number of specta
tors was down because of difficulties getting
into the city.
A winter weather advisory remained in ef
fect throughout the day for south central
Texas and the Hill Country, with tempera
tures near or below freezing generally north
of a line from Del Rio to College Station.
Light freezing rain and sleet was reported in
the Hill Country.
The most serious power problems were in
southeast Texas, where 53,500 Entergy cus
tomers in the three counties around Beau
mont and Port Arthur and some 50,000
Houston Lighting & Power Co. users re
mained in the dark. Still, that was an im
provement from the nearly 300,000 cus
tomers who were powerless 24 hours earlier.
“We’re continuing to have trees and tree
limbs fall onto our lines,” Entergy spokesman
Kim McMurray said. “We’ll get one area put
back on and then a tree limb falls and knocks
that same area out or some other.”

being brought in to help.
“We hope that the bulk will be back on by
Friday but there may be some that linger
into the weekend,” he said.
HL&P officials hoped to have 80 percent
of their outages fixed by Tuesday night.
“I understand what they’re going through,”
Charles Jones, who was without power in his
Houston home, said. “They have a lot of lines
and you’ve just got to be patient.”
Most schools in the Houston area re
mained shut Tuesday for a second straight
day, but it appeared classes would start re
suming Wednesday.
Greyhound bus service in Houston also
was idled Tuesday for a second consecutive
day, forcing travelers to pass the time in the
terminal. Some slept in parked buses.
“We’ve been sitting around talking to
people,” said Manuel Hernandez, who was
trying to get home to Laredo. “It’s a little
boring, but you do what you can. You make
the best of it.”
At Dallas-Fort Worth International Air
port, where American Airlines cancelled 600
out of 1,560 flights Monday, only 160 depar
tures were put off Tuesday as temperatures
warmed.
