Barkley plays nice as Rocket
send Knicks packing, 106-86
HOUSTON (AP) — Charles Barkley had 29 points,
12 rebounds and no fights with Charles Oakley as the
Houston Rockets beat the New York Knicks for the
first time since Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals, 106-
86 Tuesday night.
The Rockets snapped a four-
game losing streak to the Knicks and
broke New York’s four-game win
ning streak.
All eyes were on Barkley and
Oakley early in the game. Oakley
body-slammed Barkley to the floor
during an exhibition game in
October and received a two-game
suspension and $10,000 fine.
Barkley drew a one-game suspen

Tigers push Bears back in cave
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — After a
prolonged absence, the home court
advantage was back at Missouri.
‘T had a pretty good time
tonight, really,” Jason Sutherland
said after scoring 19 points to help
the Tigers end a school-record
four-game home conference los
ing streak with an 82-66 victory
over Baylor on Tuesday night.
“I think everyone was out there
having fun. We were just relaxing.”
Kelly Thames led an early-sec
ond half run that put the game
away and Tyron Lee added 18
points for Missouri (9-7, 1-3 Big
12), which also had begun the
conference schedule with three
losses overall for the first time
since 1985.
In the first three Big 12 games,
Missouri never led by more than
six points. In fact, the Tigers had
n’t led by more than 10 points
since beating Southern 111-69
on Dec. 30.
“You know, when you lose a
couple, three games it’s hard to
come out sometimes, coacl
Norm Stewart said. "It does some
thing to your confidence.
‘T think the second half w
really put some things together.
Sutherland had four 3-pointen
and made 5 of 6 free throws when
he was fouled behind the 3-poini
line, then added a layup late in the
game. Missouri was a season-
ll-for-21 from 3-point range, with
Tyron Lee also hitting four
scoring 16 points, and Baylor
made eight 3-pointers.
Davis
Continued from Page 10
“I thought the game would be
the same as it was in high school,”
Davis said. “But it’s a lot more
intense and physical.”
Davis took a big step in
improving his skills this summer
when he competed for the United
States on the Nike All-Star Team
in the William Jones Cup
International Tournament in
Taipei, Taiwan.
The round-robin competition
pitted Davis and his team, which
included eight players from the
Atlantic Coast Conference and
one from the Big East, against
professional national teams from
10 different countries.
"It was a good experience,”
Davis said. “I had to improve the
physical part of my game because I
was playing against professionals.”
Barone said ,
Davis’ opportu
nity to play with
and against
such talented
players was
invaluable for
his future.
"Playing with
those guys from
the ACC really
improved his
game,” Barone said. “You can see
the impact that experience made
on his skills.”
Davis lead the William Jones
Cup team in rebounding (6.6) and
field goal percentage (76 percent)
Davis
and was second in scoring (10.8)
and blocked shots (0.6).
“I was lucky to get the chanceto
play for Nike,” Davis said. “1
learned some things playing (over
seas) that I couldn’t learn here.”
Barone said the next step for
Davis will be becoming more
vocal on the floor.
"Calvin is a leader in the way he
plays, but he’s not a vocal guy,"
Barone said. “But he has said a few
words to us this season and I’m
expecting him to get more and
more vocal as the season goes on."
Davis said he just wants to
contribute to the teams
improvements.
“I’ll just go out and rebound.
score and block shots," he said.
“I think that’s what I do best for
my team.”

Alexander said the experience
of spending the rest of her high
school career on the sideline gave
her the desire and motivation to
beat the odds and recover quickly.
“Sitting on the bench and watch

said. “But I realized I still had an
opportunity to play in college,
something my teammates who
were out there playing didn’t have.
That pushed me. This experience

came back.”
And she is.
Alexander is averaging 21
minutes, 9 points and 5
rebounds in her first 12 games
of collegiate competition.
Harvey said she did not expect
such progress.
“What Kera is doing now is
amazing after coming off a total
ACL tear less than a year ago,”
Harvey said. “She’s still laying in
some pain, but her competitive
ness won’t let her take a break.”
Freshman teammate Prissy
Sharpe said Alexander’s work
ethic has been an example for the
rest of the team to follow.
"Kera plays hard every game
and plays bigger than she is,"
Sharpe said. “I don’t think she
ever gives less than 100 percenl
out there.”
Alexander said the ordeal has
given her a better perspective on
the game.
“Sitting on the bench my senior
year made me appreciate these four
year's I have left to play,” Alexander
said. “I give everything I have out
there every minute because I know
what can happen. I want to make
the most of the opportunity Texas

win over the hated Longhorns, always a distinct pos
sibility in a packed “Holler House.”
“I’ve been looking forward to this game all sea
son,” Brown said. “This is a big game — a rivalry
game. But the truth is, like every other game, youjusi
have to go out and play well against the competition.
So I look forward to having a nice, clean game anil
beat the hell outta t.u.”
“I think we’ve matured as a team by having so
many close defeats,” Brown said. “We’re right there,
and soon we’ll be able to get over the hump.”
A big step in getting over the hump would be a
