Ring Dunking
The familiar sight of seniors
dunking their Aggie Rings in pitch
ers of beer ended this semester un
der the direction of the Texas Alco
holic Beverage Commission. The
move came in response to a state
law prohibiting the sale of alcohol
in a container larger than 32 ounces
for consumption by one person.
Don Ganter, owner and
founder of the Dixie Chicken, be
gan offering 32-ounce schooners
for ring-dunking to replace the
60-ounce pitchers.
Ganter said he still sells the glass
pitchers as keepsakes to students,
but he sells them empty.
Servings larger than 32 ounces
are still available for groups larger
than one person.
Post-Tenure Review
The Board of Regents mandated
that each of the 10 schools in the
Texas A&M University System must
develop a process to evaluate
tenured faculty. A&M-College Sta
tion was the last campus in the Sys
tem to develop a post-tenure re
view process.
Although some members of
the Faculty Senate strongly op
posed the measure, the Senate
submitted its recommendation
to the Board of Regents follow
ing its October meeting.
Chancellor Barry Thompson
sent a letter to the Board of Re
gents Nov. 21 stating that all Sys
tem schools complied with the
mandate.
The Board of Regents will review
the processes from each of the
schools next semester.
Steve Oberhelman, speaker of
the Faculty Senate, said he is opti
mistic the Board will approve the
process without change.
Hopwood vs. The State of Texas
The United States Supreme
Court declined to hear the Universi
ty of Texas’ case on race-based ad
missions in their upcoming session.
The 5th Circuit Court’s decision
ended preferential admissions and
university scholarships at all Texas
universities. Mississippi and
Louisiana also fall under the 5th
Circuit Court’s decision, but cite
other legal precedents as reasons
for non-compliance.
In a forum on Nov. 12, legal
experts and university officials
from around the state investigat
ed the future of minority admis
sions in Texas.
Texas Higher Education Coordi
nating Board Commissioner Ken
neth Ashworth expressed concern
that surrounding states would draw
minorities away from Texas schools
with minority scholarships that
Texas is no longer able to offer.
Currently, Texas and Califor
nia are the only states in the na
tion that do not offer admissions
and scholarships with race as a
deciding factor.
Don Davis
Don Davis Jr., a 1995 A&M
graduate, was indicted in March
in connection with two rapes on
the A&M campus in 1995. Re
leased on a $150,000 bond, Davis
disappeared on August 21, five
days before his trial.
Davis’s car was found near a Lit-
de Rock, Ark., airport in September.
Davis’s parents were arrested in
connection with his disappearance.
University Police Department
Detective Sgt. Jim Lindholm said
the ongoing search for Davis left
them with no leads, but the investi
gation will continue indefinitely
‘‘Don Davis will eventually sur
face,” he said. “When he does, he
will be arrested.”
“As long as I’m a police officer
and Mr. Davis is running around
free, I will be hunting him.”
SSFAB
The Student Services Fee Alloca
tion Board’s proposal to cut the
budgets of five University depart
ments was approved by the Student
Senate March 9.
Laurent Therival, Student Gov
ernment vice president of finance
and former chair of the fee alloca
tion committee, said the board
wanted to avoid increasing student
fees as much as possible.
Therival said the budget cuts
were intended to make the organi
zations operate more efficiently.
