ANNOUNCING EXTENDED PAVILION HOUR
Continued from Page 1
The fee is used for the physi
cal maintenance of the facilities
including utility bills, custodial
services and replacement of
equipment.
Busch said the fee indirectly
helps students and staff of MSC
programs that use the facilities.
“It doesn’t go directly toward
programming but it offsets the fi
nancial pressures groups that use
the MSC may encounter,” he said.
Busch said the MSC will show its
appreciation by keeping its facilities
open 24 a day hours during finals.
The Schewitz lounge, the Ser
pentine lounge and several other
meeting rooms in the MSC will be
available for study use. As a bonus,
free coffee will be served at the
MSC main desk.
Busch said the facilities are here
to serve the students.
“We really try to maintain the
facility for student use,” he said.
“They can use it to study or just sit
around and sleep.”
Babbitt rejected
scientists’ advice
AUSTIN (AP) — The U.S. Interi
or Secretary, Bruce Babbitt, reject
ed the advice of his own scientists
in deciding against listing the Bar
ton Springs salamander as an en
dangered species, the Austin
American-Statesman reports.
The newspaper Thursday cited
newly disclosed records in report
ing that a recommendation to
grant protection under the En
dangered Species Act had passed
Interior Department legal muster.
But in late August, Babbitt an
nounced that he had reached
agreement with Texas under
which the state would firm up
water-quality regulations to pro
tect the salamander, which is
found only at Barton Springs and
two nearby spring outlets.
Local environmentalists say
the records show that federal sci
entists didn’t believe state regula
tions were strong enough to pro
tect the salamander or the purity
of water in the springs.
