Doe! Police capture
escaped reindeer
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Christ
mas is more than three weeks
away, but one of Santa’s reindeer
has been prancing through town
a little early.
“You’re not going to believe this
— I’m in pursuit of one of Santa’s
reindeer,” police officer Richard
Smith announced Sunday morning
over the police radio.
It was the beginning of what
became a five-mile chase
through downtown San Antonio
and Victoria Courts, a public
housing complex.
“I called it in like a car chase,
a dark brown deer headed south
on Alamo, east on Durango,”
Smith said.
It began when a doe named
Peppa escaped from a display of
Santa’s “reindeer” at the Little
Christmas Village at La Villita. La
Villita is a historic village filled
with specialty shops in the heart
of downtown.
Smith was working as a securi
ty guard at La Villita when he saw
the deer and a fawn walking
through the park. The fawn stayed
in the park and was quickly re
turned to the pen. But the doe had
other ideas.
“I thought [the deer] might be
real tame, so I tried to lure it with
some food, but it got scared and
took off," Smith said.
Judge says Keating
jury contaminated
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The
federal fraud and racketeering
conviction of former Lincoln Sav
ings boss Charles Keating Jr.
was thrown out Monday by a
judge who ruled the jurors were
contaminated by learning of an
earlier conviction.
Prosecutors told U.S. District
Judge Mariana Pfaelzer that it
wasn’t clear the jurors had
learned of Keating’s prior state
court conviction, and if they had,
the effect on their deliberations
was negligible.
But Pfaelzer sided with Keat
ing’s lawyer, who said that similar
cases had been reversed when
the contamination was nowhere
near “as pervasive or as detailed
as it was in this case.”
After more than an hour of ar
guments, Pfaelzer simply said “Al
right, the motion’s granted,” and
ordered both sides back for a
status conference Jan. 16.
Prosecutor Sharon McCaslin
said the government “absolutely”
will prosecute Keating again.
