DALLAS (AP) — About 2,000
people, 12 percent of them stu
dents, have been registered by
the state under a new law de
signed to inform school districts
when a sex offender is living
nearby, The Dallas Morning News
reported Thursday.
Statewide, 258 sex offenders
listed their occupation as student
of either elementary, junior high or
high schools.
State law requires students to
be placed in an alternative school
and then returned to regular
classrooms. But state officials be
lieve many school districts may be
unaware of the sex offenders in
their classrooms.
The existence of sex offenders
in school first drew attention in
Plano when high school football
star Rashad Gunn was found to
have pleaded guilty to the sexual
assault of a teen-ager in Garland
in December 1995.
His offense was unknown to
school officials, who faulted a lack
of information sharing between po
lice and the school district.
“It’s just like everybody says
Gunn is a quirk in the system.
He is the system,” said state
Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano,
and the author of sex offender
registration reforms.
