Astros stadium referenda
scores narrow victor
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston As
tros owner Drayton McLane left for
an owners’ meeting in Chicago
Wednesday with a happy message:
“Houston is a baseball city.”
Although a referendum to con
struct a $265 million downtown
stadium for the Astros passed by
a margin of only 16,000 votes,
that was good enough of a man
date for McLane to keep the As
tros in the city.
“This will keep baseball here
well into the next century,”
McLane said. “This is something
we had to have to be competitive
and I’ll be happy to tell the other
owners that we’re moving forward
in Houston.”
The referendum also approved
$200 million to update the As
trodome to help attract another
NFL team to replace the Oilers,
who are moving to Tennessee.
“It was a long battle and we’re
extremely pleased it worked out
the way it did,” McLane said.
“We’ve still got a lot of work to do
but this was a big step and it’s go
ing to mean a lot for Houstonians
and the City of Houston.”
The Astros started a victory par
ty at 7 p.m. when the polls closed
but it was not until much later that
victory was assured. The measure
was failing early in the evening but
finally pulled ahead by a 51 per
cent to 49 percent margin.
Astros general manager Gerry
Hunsicker said the organization
was relieved by the vote.
“Last night was like the sev
enth game of the World Series
and we’d given up a 5-run first in
ning,” Hunsicker said. “But we
battled back and our closer saved
it for us in the ninth.”
The final unofficial results on
Wednesday were 396,076 for and
379,678 against.
" This is not just about bas|
ball, this is about enhancingi
community and the quality oil
and keeping Houston asawo|
class city,” Mci,ane said.
New Astros managerial
Dierker, a former playerai
broadcaster for the Astros, isg|
the team won’t be moving. ,
“It’s an incredible relief,” Dkl
er said. "You never want totkj
