Teen-ager serves
unusual punishment

LORENZO, Texas (AP) —
LaTosha Pringler was easy enough
to spot as you rounded the corner
in this tiny town: A 16-year-old girl
sitting in a chalk box drawn on a
downtown sidewalk and counting
cars as they passed.
The unusual sight Tuesday was
the result of an unusual court-im
posed punishment.
Municipal Judge J.R. Peterson or
dered LaTosha to tally passing cars
in her spiral notebook from Tuesday
through Thursday as punishment for
cursing at Joyce Arthur, the Lorenzo
High School nurse.
So there the lOth-grader sat in a
chair in front of an abandoned store
in the town of 1,250 about 20 miles
east of Lubbock. She sat inside an
eight-foot by eight-foot chalk line,
from which she wasn’t allowed to
stray for eight hours except for an
hour-long lunch and two breaks.
Passers-by had different reac
tions to the punishment. One of
fered a Coke, while others honked
or waved. Judge Peterson twice
drove past in his white Cadillac
while ignoring the swirl of media
around the girl.
"It makes me embarrassed in
front of all these people," Pringler
said. “All my friends will see me
out here.”
Arthur told the school;
lice that Pringler, who is
called her a “white
denies that charge.
Arthur, who declined to speal
reporters, is the wife of OffarJi
Arthur, who escorted Pringled
school to her outpost, whichi

son’s real estate agency.
“ He (Aaron Arthur) said
leave or if I don’t keep trad
cars north and southbound!
would take me to theYouthCe
for six months,” Pringler said.
The offense of disorderlji
duct is a Class C misdemea
the equivalent of a speeding
et. She couldn't be sentenced

about 20 men in a raid on Harper’s Ferry.

place in Killeen, Texas, as George Hennard crashed
his pickup truck into a Luby’s Cafeteria and opened
fire, killing 23 people before taking his own life.
One year ago: Black men gathered in Washington for
the “Million Man March" in which they pledged to improve
themselves and forswear violence in a revival-style chant
led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
