Honor society convention held at A&N
By Carla Renea Marsh
The Battalion
Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society
hosted more than 250 members
from across the country at the 33rd
National Convention at Texas A&M
this weekend. The last time the
A&M chapter hosted the conven
tion was in 1976.
The convention’s purpose was
to make changes in the organiza
tion’s constitution, nominate new
national officers, publicize and
promote ideas, and look at the fu
ture of Phi Eta Sigma.
Kate McKeon, welcome-com
mittee chair and a junior civil engi
neer major, said the convention is
a great opportunity for members
across the country.
The convention began Friday
evening and lasted until Sunday
morning.
Guests were greeted at the Sam
Houston Sanders Corps Center for
tours Friday.
That evening guests attended a
barbecue dinner in the Kyle Field
press box followed by a scavenger
hunt at Rumours in the Memorial
Student Center.
The honor society presented a
videotape of a previous induction
ceremony at the luncheon Satur
day. The videotape provided a
chance for other universities to see
how A&M inducts new members.
Jennifer Knuffman, a sophomore
at Quincy University, was awarded a
certificate at the ceremony for be
ing the 600,000th member inducted
into Phi Eta Sigma.
Michelle Davis, a convention
coordinator and a junior bioengi
neering major, said the 500,000th
member inducted four years ago
was an A&M student.
“I think the induction ceremony
and the convention as a whole was
very successful,” Davis said.
Specialty sessions for chapter
officers and leadership and mo
tivational workshops were held
for members.
A banquet followed the induc
tion ceremony Saturday evening.
Guest speakers included A&M
Student Development Specialist
Stephenie Rhodes, local merchant
Fred Brown and MSCDirei
James Reynolds.
Rhodes said development!
motivation for the organizai
are vital.
"You have to know your
ter," Rhodes said."Evaluatione
key to any organization. 1
Guests attended a breaii
buffet Sunday before the
check-out.
Davis said the entertaii
and the Singing Cadetswert
vorites for most guests.
“Most of the universities
attended were fromupK
and don't see a lot of school
thusiasm,” Davis said. “Ill
most people were impresst
our Aggie spirit,”
