The presence of women at A&M
has grown with the development of
organizations and programs like
social sororities, the Society of
Women Engineers, and women’s stud
ies courses.
“I would definitely do it again,” Harvey
said. “Those bad experiences were
nowhere near the good experiences.”
Jan Rinehart, Women in Engineering,
Science, and Technology director, said
women are well-represented in A&M’s
engineering department.
A&M ranks second nationally in
the percentage of women enrolled in
engineering, she said, behind the
University of Puerto Rico.
The Corps of Cadets added women in
1974 with the first all-women outfit, W-l.
Maj. Rebecca Ray, special assistant
to the commandant, said the Corps
began admitting women at a time
when gender integration was a
national issue.
Ray said the Corps continues to
increase its appeal to women because
of the heightened interest.
“One of the things they worked on
is making uniforms more suitable for
women,” Ray said. “ (And) this year, we
integrated more units than lastyeai,'
But Ray, who set a milestoneasl
first female officer on the comm
dam’s staff for the Corps, said
men find it difficult to acceptw
in leadership positions.
“As far as breaking down barrier!

it because of the tradition,” shesaid. || ||
