said. He said barbershop quartet music has
appealed to several of the singers and drawn a
considerable number of audience members.
“These songs are easy to sing and aren’t
meant to be sung by a big star, just average guys
like us,” Allen said. “Tve been singing in barber
shop quartets since 1959. A guy I worked with in
Oklahoma knew I liked to sing, so he mentioned
the group to me. I had a bowling match that
night, so I had to come in late. When I walked in,
they had an international champion quartet
singing ‘Sonny Boy.’ I couldn’t join quick enough.
I had to quit bowling.”
Allen said he has made many close friends
through singing with various quartets.
“I have more friends in barbershop than any
where else,” he said. “You can’t get mad at any
one when you’re singing, unless they’re not hit
ting their notes.”
The singers make themselves at home during
the Tuesday night rehearsals. The singers drift in
singing their own tunes. Practice begin
coaching on posture and breathing, then
to exercises with a teaching quartet and
with everyone singing a capella.
