and was honored at the 1995 Texas
A&M Academic Banquet.
Dingwall attributes her success
both in tennis and in the class
room to the positive attitude she
learned from her parents.
"They taught me that a nega
tive attitude won’t get you any
where,” Dingwall said. “They have
always encouraged me through
out my tennis career.”
Senior Julie Beahm said her
teammate is very versatile and is
always motivating the team
members.
“She has done well academ
ically, and she is a hard worker,”
Beahm said. “She has set many
goals for herself and so far, has
achieved most of them.”
Ten years from now, Dingwall
hopes to see herself settled with a
family and a career as an accoun
tant. What’s missing? Tennis.
“I’m just not going to pursue it
any further after this year,” she said.
“I plan to focus on graduating (in
May 1998) and finding a job.”
Yet that does not mean that
Dingwall will lose her leadership
characteristics.
“It’s exciting to be a leader,”
she said.
Due to Dingwall’s enormous
impact on her teammates and
even on her coaches, it just goes to
show that actions do speak louder
than words.
Stanberry
Continued from Page 15
Stanberry said the next season
she quit volleyball to concentrate
on running.
“I’m one who believes that if I
am going to do something, I’m
going to do it well,” Stanberry said.
“So, I decided to
put all of my energy
into cross country.”
Once at A&M,
Stanberry began to
learn a lot about
the sport from
Etchberger. She
said she has many
things in common
with Etchberger.
“Some people
are born to run,”
Stanberry said.
“But others work
hard to get where they are. I think
Shannon and I, are both alike in
that sense. She pushed me to get
better. I think (Coach Greg Hinze)
looks at me the same way he
looked at Shannon. He doesn’t
expect me to be the same as her,
but he expects me to push myself
and be a front-runner like she was.”
Unlike many sports, cross
country does not field huge
crowds or endorsement contracts.
Stanberry said cross country run
ners do not care about glamour.
“You can understand why peo
ple play football,” Stanberry said.
“There is money, recognition and
comraderie. In running, the
rewards are more intrinsic. There is
a sense of individual satisfaction.”
To keep track of her ambitions,
Stanberry said she writes her
goals and accomplishments down
before each meet.
“I keep a running
journal,” Stanberry
said. “Before every
meet, I’ll write down
a goal or my feelings
or anticipations.
After the meet, I’ll
write down the
result of the race,
and see if I accom
plished what I set
out to.”
Last weekend at
the Audobon
Invitational in New
Orleans, Stanberry
recorded a time of 11:42 in the
two-mile run, good for an 11th-
place finish.
The sophomore said she
feels ready for more competi
tion this season.
“I’ve learned my lesson from
past injuries,” Stanberry said.
"Now, I know I’m in shape. I feel
healthy, and it’s an awesome feel
ing knowing that I can go out and
get the job done.”
‘Tin one who
believes that if I
am going to do
something, Tm
going to do it well.”
