Help is just on the other
Joseph Novak
The Battalion
E veryone can use a little help
every now and then.
The Student Counseling
Service identified this need for
help at Texas A&M, and in
September 1995, the Student
Counseling Helpline was created.
Dr. Wade Birch, Director of
Student Counseling Services,
said the Helpline was derived
from the basic idea presented by
the Helpline at the
University of Michigan.
“Any time you have a
small city, you’re going to
have the potential for all
kinds of problems and crises
coming up at any hour of the
day, any day of the week.”
This potential creates a
need that is filled by the
HelpLine, a telephone
counseling service available
for students from 4 p.m.
until 8 a.m. on weekdays
and around the clock on
weekends.
Dr. Kerry Hope, psycholo
gist and associate director of the
Student Counseling Service, said
that whenever the on-campus
Counseling Center is closed, the
HelpLine is available.
“Students don’t have to be in a
crisis, or they don’t have to have a
particular thing in mind when
they call the HelpLine,” Hope said.
“There are some people who call
because they are lonely and want
support. There are some people
who have a particular issue they
want to talk through with an
objective third party. So we try to
be prepared to deal with that."
Hope said the volunteers are
trained thoroughly before they
are accepted.
Volunteers are put through a
one-hour pre-interview before
they are accepted for training.
They receive 45 to 50 hours of
training during the initial week.
During this training, they perform
an hour and a half of hands-on
role playing each day. Once this is
completed, if they are accepted,
they continue the training with a
two-stage process to determine
how the volunteers’ skills are pro
gressing. Once these training
phases are completed successful
ly, the volunteer is eligible to work
with the HelpLine.
“We require a minimum of a
two-semester commitment,”
Hope said. "But it must be a really
nice experience (for the volun
teers) because we’ve had some
people who have been with us

A&M students.

since January of 1995.”
To support the training the vol
unteers have received, they con
tinue to attend education meet
ings and a one-hour small group
supervision session.
Volunteers are then paired and
placed on the HelpLine, ready to
assist students in need.
if volunteers require assistance
in the event of a crisis, a team of
five psychologists are ready to
help them. This helps ensure that
a crisis is dealt with in a profes
sional manner. If a student
requires more assistance, they are
then referred to the nearest avail
able hospital.
Hope said it is important for
people to realize that Texas A&M
has a 24-hour commitment to
the students.
“Students are awake at 3 in the
morning,” Hope said. “They don’t
have to call a friend long distance,
and they don’t have to wake some
body up. There’s somebody avail
able for them at the Helpli;
