Lachemann resign!
from Angels’ post
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) —
Marcel Lachemann, frustrated
by the constant losing that he
likened to “water torture,” quit
on Tuesday as manager of the
California Angels.
John McNamara, 64, who
managed California in 1983-84,
will take over for the rest of this
season while the Angels conduct
a “very patient” search for a new
manager.
Under Lachemann, the An
gels collapsed after holding a 13-
game AL West lead over Seattle
last year. They’ve gone into an
other tailspin this year and are
last in the AL West.
“Marcel took the bullet for the
entire organization,” Angels pres
ident Tony Tavares said at an
Anaheim Stadium news confer
ence. “I’ve often discussed the
club’s effort more than his effort.”
Lachemann, a longtime pitch
ing coach, succeeded the fired
Buck Rodgers in May 1994. He
had not managed previously in
the majors. On Tuesday, he
seemed almost relieved to be
stepping down.
‘Tm 55 years old and my goal
never really was to manage
when I started out,” he said.
“And when this (job) came up,
what I wanted to do wash
piit together a solid organize:
and a foundation that coulc
built on for many years. Id:;
have long-range goals ofbeir.
manager and I don't now."
Lachemann’s disappoint
became apparent the past
months as the Angels strugg;
“It was like water torture
said. “It just kept drippingtl

where it was the thing to dc

He said he had mentione:
Tavares and general mans;
Bill Bavasi about a month
he was considering resigning
“I mentioned that I was

was affecting me personal;
Lachemann said, addingti|

Lachemann stressedth
was no pressure on him tore
even now, saying Bavasi:
Tavares urged him to stay.
“I have given it my beste:
and tried everything I know
and it is not working,” Lat:
mann said. “I do not feel ba:
about my effort, but do feel"
badly about the results.”
Locations for Housta
ballpark debated
HOUSTON (AP) — Location,
location, location.
That’s the central issue as
Houston leaders discuss building
a new baseball park to keep the
Astros in Houston.
Harris County Judge Robert
Eckels and Astros owner Drayton
McLane Jr. said Monday they be
lieve the Astrodome complex
would be the best location be
cause it could become a regional
sports-entertainment complex.
