(AP)The New York Yankees
acquired slugger Cecil Fielder
from the Detroit Tigers on
Wednesday night, only about an
hour before the midnight trad
ing deadline.
The Yankees gave up Ruben
Sierra and minor league pitch
er Matt Drews for the Tigers
star, who had been vocal about
wanting to escape Detroit and
play for a contender. The Yan
kees led Baltimore by 10 games
in the AL East, while Detroit
had the worst record in the ma
jor leagues.
The Fielder deal was the sec
ond of the day involving a big
power hitter. Earlier, the San
Diego Padres acquired all-star
outfielder Greg Vaughn from
the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Yankees also sent Mark
Hutton to the Florida Marlins
for David Weathers in an ex
change of pitchers.
Also, Seattle picked up left
hander Terry Mulholland from
Philadelphia, and Los Angeles ac
quired Chad Curtis from Detroit.
“I’m just happy to have the
opportunity to go somewhere
with someone in contention and
I’ll try to help the New York
Yankees win the pennant and
the World Series,” Fielder said
in Detroit. “I feel good about go
ing out there.”
Fielder, who hit 51 homers
in 1990 — including his 50th at
Yankee Stadium — has hit at
least 28 homers in six consecu
tive seasons. He is hitting .248
this year with 26 homers and
80 RBIs.
Detroit has been interested in
trading Fielder, but his large
salary has been a drawback. He
is due $2,360,656 for the re
mainder of this season and $7.2
million in 1997, part of a five-
year contract worth $36,187,500.
Vaughn will fill a power need
for the Padres, who are in the
midst of a tight race in the NL
West. Vaughn is having his best
season with 31 home runs, 95
RBIs and a .280 batting aver
age, but he was eligible for -

pressures.
“I think they WEint to go out and
have a good time and not worry
about school or Einything like that,”
she said.
Alberto Gutierrez, a senior busi

should stop drinking opce they
reach a certain limit, but stopping
is sometimes hard.

they’re having fun and won't &
to friends,” he said. “Theyi
control.”

alcohol consumption byjye
aware of the potentially danger
atmosphere. —
Gutierrez said some stuck
realize the dangers of alcoholp
soning, but don’t care.
“Sometimes it’s peer press:
and they just go along withll
crowd,” he said.
Hilbig said students don’tW
ize the dangers associated witlu
cohol and don’t think about thep
tential consequences.

they’ve had and just keep havini

are confident there will be a
good turnout.
Reynolds said the per
