LASORDA
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tom
Lasorda, an ambassador and
cheerleader for baseball for
nearly two decades, retired to
day as manager of the Los Ange
les Dodgers after having heart
surgery last month.
Lasorda, 68, underwent the
angioplasty procedure when it
was determined he had a heart
attack. He said was cleared med
ically to return, but realized it
made sense to retire.
“For me to get into a uniform
again — as excitable as I am — I
could not continue,” Lasorda, his
voice shaking, said at a Dodger
Stadium news conference. “I de
cided it’s best for me and the or
ganization to step down. ... That’s
quite a decision.”
He had said as recently as
Friday he intended to return. He

sound was distinctive, dull and

I didn’t know what to do. Part
of me wanted to see what had
happened. Part of me wanted to
run and help. The rest of me
wanted to run away as fast as I
could. I succumbed to the last of
the three because the Atlanta
police sealed off the area as fast
as they could.
I think that’s when the weight
of the situation finally settled in
on me. If there was one bomb,
there could be more. But where?
